What exactly does this piece do and how would it affect everyday ride characteristics?

from what i understand it kind od acts like a big lateral spring. youll notice it in the corners, but going straight you wont feel it much.

James,
You're thinking of an anti-sway bar.
KC,
During launch ost cars tends to twist. That's just the natural reaction, the rear axle will try to twist the same direction that the drive shaft is going. An anti-roll bar attaches to both ends of your axles and presses up against the floor and side frames of the car. So when one side of the axle tries to twist, it pulls the car and the other side of the axle with it. The end results is no more twisting at launch.
For an example of chassis twist/flex, look at the picture of Shane's car in his signature (HoustonLX). You'll notice the drivers side lifting up higher than the passenger side. An anti-roll bar would make the front end lift evenly, along with sub frame connectors in his case since he doesn't have those either. :)

After anti-roll bar:

hahaha Ben is right and wrong. I do finally have sub frames on the car. I went to pomofo route and installed an air bag in the passenger side rear to help the twisting. It has helped for the most part. As you can see in my sig pic, the car is still twisting over a little bit. I could fix this by upping the pressure in the air bag a lil.

Would this help with the way the car feels on the big end? I know running low pressure in the tires makes it shimmy a bit - but would it help to stop it?

Oh yeh...it helps on both ends. Not that my car was bad to start with, but after the Wolfe anti-sway bar went in a few years ago, it does not twist at launch and stays arrow straight on the big end. Since I am a pomofo, it was hard to shell out the money for it, but in the long run it has been one of the better investments in my car.

On a faster car the anti-roll bar is the way to go.
My car has the eibach rear springs and one air bag. The springs have different rates to help the car launch straight. The problem with this type of setup is the car is looser at high speeds. My friends 8 second car wants to go to the right at the end of the track with uneven rear springs.
With an anti-roll bar you normally set up the rear of the car with the same spring rates in the rear and adjust the roll bar to correct the crooked launch, or on a fast car, say 9 seconds or faster this adjustment can mean the difference of going straight or hitting the wall 100 feet out.
The best part about the anti-roll bar setup is with the same springs in the rear of the car, you are much more stable at the top end of the track.
For the shimmy problem we try to keep the slicks off the ground when the car is not in use or they will flat spot and we always balance them. Since we have been doing these two things, the shimmy problem we had is gone no matter what pressures we run.
