Looking for a cheap code reader / scanner for 89, 93 mustang 94 and 96 Lincoln TCs. Would like for it to read ABS, etc codes. Any suggestions on new or used units?

I have the Auto Xray from Checkers. Wasn't exactly cheap but will scan OBD-I and II, tell you the error code number, then a brief description of what that code means. It'll also turn off the MIL. There are different versions, some will even do real-time data streaming... but I didn't get that one.

I got the Innova one from OReillys for myself for Christmas and it was NOT cheap, lol. It was about $120. They had readers there as low as $35 though.
I've gotta try it tonite for ABS codes cuz my lite just came on.
I've used a buddies older version in the past and they are very good.

Joe, please let me know how the ABS check-out goes. Jessica's GT has had a code (light on) for some time now. I 'think' it's a sensor, but couldn't check the resistance on the rears. FWIW, her fronts measured 1640 and 1618 ohms, on an '01 car...

I have a used scanner. Connects to the test port under the hood, but I don't remember what all it will read. It worked on the 95 and I think it will work on yours, but will look at it tonight and see.

It's a very basic unit that will light and beep only, no fancy LCD screen. You have to count the light blinks and then look up the code in the book. It's basically one step above jumping the pins yourself :D.

Well bummerama.......it didn't pick up the ABS code.
I have 8 other codes though, lol (i turned the MIL off with the Tweecer a long time ago).
I didn't do an exhaustive look at the book but I didn't see a reference to ABS so I guess..... :riped:

Joe & Chris,

Did you look at Joe's (stangplus2birds on Corral) info on diagnosing ABS systems?

Might have some info of use for you.

Very useful!
Includes a link to an article on Corral that says that every car has an ABS connector that, by grounding one of the wires, it causes the ABS light to flash in a sequence that defines the trouble.
That is, you don't need any kind of code reader! Here's the link:

Do you guys know anyone that has or uses Autoenginuity? I've been thinking about getting the Ford bundle and would like to hear some thoughts.

I had good luck with my Nemysis from Corn Well as it does all and Foreign/Asian etc/ABS..bUT A $1,400 PRICE TAG..I also own a Star Test from Ford that is now semi outdated but works up too 2004..Does everything and programs all Ford/Lincoln /Mercury Vehicle..Has PATS for key programming etc..Price tag was pretty high when bought and most would have not paid What I did but at the time I was heavier in this I was using alot and its paid for itself in due time!
