The Sudden Impact and S&S Raciing event was held at HMP yesterday. Despite one 15-20 minute rain shower, the event went on. Car was running a little slow n/a off the trailer and not great on the juice, but I made a tweak here and there and got it back where it should be. Last n/a pass was a 7.30 and best nitrous pass lifting a touch was 6.97.
I Had to concentrate on cutting a good light, so I was leaving the nitrous off for the launch, then reaching up for it after I released the t-brake and hitting it in the top of 1st. This got me through 3 rounds with .09-.11 lights, then I pulled a .04 outta my A$$. Semi-final the green fairmont red lit, so I got lucky there. Ended up against Patrick Miller's t/a in the final. I cut a .11 to his .24, so I had him covered by plenty, but I was slow reaching for the gas and got on the 6400 rev limiter for about 1 second in the top of 1st. Then on the top end of the track I let off hoping to break him out, but I could have stayed in it, I only went 7.19 to his 7.05, so unfortunately he took the stripe by .01!
Arrrgggghhhhh!
Oh well, $300 for runner up isn't too bad! I'll be ready for next time.

Overall it is a very well handled and run event. My only complaint is that we have to be on our toes the whole day waiting to be called up and weren't able to watch any races. If I had a bike or 4 wheeler it would be better, but being all the way in the back of the pits sucks to walk up to the track. Gary at S&S Racing is doing a great job with it and keeps the racers informed of whats going on as best he can. He even BBQ'd and offered to feed everyone! His wife grilled some killer pork chops!

I hope Gary keeps up the index. It sounds like a blast and I'd like to run in it at some point!

I don't know how many times I have seen you post that you lost after you lifted hoping the other guy would break out. One of these days you might actually figure out how to dial your car in to where you won't have to lift.

The car is dialed pretty close, went 6.97 in one qualifying round, I just have a habit of lifting and being afraid to break out. Seeings how I got on the limiter in 1st gear, I should have known I could stay in it and be under the number, just got worried. Well, it cost me $500, so maybe next time I'll have learned my lesson.

Ben, Gary is signed to have these until December the 2nd weekend of every month. After that its up in the air, he needs to get the car count up, so tell everyone to come and race.
Indexes are: 5.00, 5.80, 6.20, and 7.00 I believe.
$40 to make semi's
$300 runner up
$800 1st place (7.00 index, the others may pay more)

Ben you oughta be able to cover that 5.80 index pretty easily!

How much to enter?

$50 or $55, can't remember exactly. Its specator cost plus $40 to race the index.

Thanks, but I'm still not happy with my reaction times. I can do fine against a footbrake car on the pro tree, but I'll be happy once I have consistent .05 or better. I just have to figure out how much to bump in after the 2nd stage bulb is on to get the best r/t on the t-brake and not go deep.

Just so we're clear... we were still running the "old style" reaction times where .500 was a perfect light, so maybe I'm not all that familiar with how it translates to the "new" reaction times. Is a .05 the same as a .505?

yes, or .405, depending on how the tree is setup.

Ehhh actually that would be a .450. Certainly not bad for a pro tree.

OK, .450 makes more sense, thanks. I was wondering why he was trying to improve on a .405... much quicker and it's a redeye!

Most pro tree's are based on a 4/10 scale. Cutting a light in the .4's on a pro tree is extremely difficult for footbrake cars. Hell, I think I have only done it once. However I haven't had many chances to work on it. Transbrake cars have a much easier time cutting these lights. Some events change the tree to a 5/10 pro tree for the slower classes knowing most of those cars are footbrake cars. With most tracks changing to the new L.E.D. style bulbs, the terminology has also changed. Instead of a .400/.500 being perfect, .000 is now perfect. The same applies to .500 (5/10) sportsman tree's used for bracket cars. With the old way, lets say I cut a .512 light. With the new style, my ticket will read that I cut a .012 light. The reaction is still the same between the two "styles". When trying to convert new style to old style, just add .500 to the new style and there you go.

Thanks for the breakdown of the .4 vs .5 tree... I've raced both as well ;)

I just wasn't sure where the decimal should go on conversion to the "new style" reaction times. Thanks for the clarification.

Carl,
Sounds like you had as much fun as I did at the first race. I couldn't make this race due to a family obligation. In the final I raced the green fairmont, I tree'd him by .02, had a fender on him, so I hit the brakes to not break out..... hitting the brakes is only effective if you let off the gas... My 6.97 cost me $500..... Oh well, looks like we are tied for 4th place in points. See you at the Aug 12th race.
