I have a couple of old Latitudes here at work, and I'd like to get them cleaned up and updated to use as 'shop' computers if I can. One seems to have a video/graphics issue (screen size only about 2/3, and it won't allow me to change resolution) and the other has a ton of carp on it...

The have W98 on them now, and I'm thinking XP would be better if they'll handle it. Any of you computer have's care to help a have-not out?

Thanks!

Do you have the serial numbers on them? If so I can go to Dell Support and plug in the serial numbers to get all the information on them, ie what processor, memory, video, etc...
Video card problem could be the connection on the motherboard (very common on the latitudes), or could be a driver issue.
XP cost money to install unless you have a disk and a good multi license CD key for it. If you can provide a disk and CD key, I'd be happy to try and reload them for ya. Probably drop them off with me at COTT and give me a week with them and I should have them fresh and ready to go unless there is a hardware issue.

Carl,

These were purchased by the company a few years back, FWIW. I have the serial numbers, and will get them to you Monday. I won't be able to make it to COTT, but any input you might have would be great...

Running a little late here, but these things finally came to the surface after I cleaned out my pile. I'd still like to get at least one of these jewels working, and would/could reward interested parties with my company, or better yet, money! Not much, mind you, but...

The DP/N numbers are as follows:
CS: 0002388P-12800-9C8-0786 (service tag: F6E5J)
CSx: 0003018R-12800-05C-0822 (service tag: 6JXAT)

I have a docking station, one (1) CD drive, and one (1) floppy for the pair (both drives external).

I have a copy of XP I got a couple of years ago, FWIW. These things may not be worth fooling with too much, but again, I'd like to get a tuner computer out of the pile...

Thanks to any and all!

O!

'Wish I could help ya, bro. There are more than a couple of geeks on this board that are way more qualified than I (although I'd enjoy the challenge of trying to fis em). [ Enter recent John Wayne quote here ]

There's the specs on them. I wouldn't load Windows XP on them if you can help it. Stick with Win 98se. Obviously you're in no hurry to fix them LOL, so next time you're around Baytown (COTT maybe?) bring them to me and I'll work on them for ya. Might be able to find some additional laptop memory for them, will have to go through my pile of RAM at work.

Thanks Carl! Looks like they might become doorstops, LOL! I have W98 as well, but man, even I don't want to go backwards, LOL!

In your opinion, are they even worth fooling with? If not, I'll just put them back into storage (under the pile!)...

Thanks!

Can I have the 56k modem, Chris?

I dug a 12k modem out of the neighbor's trash that I'm using now. :tiny tim face:

Well, the 1st one is pretty much a door stop. The 2nd one, if I can find a memory chip to get at least 256k in it, it can load XP and will run. It won't be fast by any means, but if you only put software on that you need to tune with and maybe office, it should be OK. We've got old laptop memory chips laying around, just have to see if they are compatible. Like said, bring me the good one and I'll play with it. I'm sure we can work out something later.

Rick, make me an offer I can't refuse! (Hint: I'm about out of DP and SJ's, -plus-, these comps aren't mine to begin with!)

Carl; thanks! I plan to go to COTT, and if you don't mind will try and bring it with me. It would be nice to have a slow and steady throw-down unit...

Ha oops wrong quote. I have learned that old computers and Xp are a bad combo. I had an old I ghz with 256 and it was so slow it almost was not worth using. I would recomend just puting Win 2000 on. One of my favorite operating systems so far.

The processor on this laptop isn't that bad. It is a PIII. Just needs some memory in it. I actually just loaded XP for someone on a Dell C Series laptop that only had 256mb of memory and it ran OK. It will probably do fine for what he wants and I'm not exactly charging $$$ to do it LOL. I'll look at it as I get time to, if I have the memory for it great, if not, I'm sure I can dig up W98 somewhere to reload on it and make it useable.

Yeah, Sean Brown put Win2K pro on my old laptop I bought for $75, (Inspiron 2500 PIII, 900) and it runs pretty well, AFTER it boots up (takes a good couple of minutes). So I just leave it plugged in all the time and on. The OS is very stable even if left alone for days or weeks. It is nice to grab for a mobile web surf and take on vacation (it has a DVD player!)

I've been looking for another one on ebay that is damaged. I procured a couple of screens and a keyboard and memory for it. If I can find a good one with just a broken screen for a decent price, (<$50) I plan to build a second one. I just keep loosing the ebay auctions I bid on!

I'm in the market for a laptop too. I have seen a few for mid $300 new. May have to wait though. Spent lots of money building my desktop. There is this one area of ebay(may be a company) that sales laptops at a very cheap price.
