I recently bought a 94 Z28 automatic and would appreciate any and all advice I could get. (I know most of you are mustang loyals and expect the 'scrap it' replies!) I also have a set of Mustang rims for sale or trade, but remember I have a Z. I would like to know of the best way to improve the shifting, as the local super shop told me there's no shift kit for my transmission.

Welcome to the site. You shouldn't get much grief for having the F-body here. Any make and model is welcome on PoMoFo. Although I can not help you with the performance mods for your car, there are several F-body guys on this ste with loads of tips for you. I am sure they will be chiming in anytime.

while i am a chevy guy, i am not a new chevy guy.... so i dont really know how ta make tha new automatics shift faster/harder. the only thing that i could think of is to convert it to either a manual, er get a transmission that they DO make a kit for (ie.- 700r4). i dunno.... just my 2 pennies.:)

I agree with Fred. A good converter always wakes any stock automatic up. I have seen reletively stock LT1/LS1's drop as much as half a sec in the 1/4 with just a converter.

This is the best idea yet. Any suggestions on which one? I'm sorry for all the questions, but I've wasted the last 2 years of my life on a honda.

Don't bother putting in a TH-700-R4 ... since that's what you already have, except yours has an electronically controlled valve body.. :) There are most definitely shift kits available for the transmission, with the best one (in my opinion) being the TransGo. They run right around 100 bucks and even have a pimpy video to help you install it (or I can do it if you're uncomfortable doing it yourself)... OR you can inexpensively firm up the shifts by doing some PCM tuning. I can help you here too :)
A good converter will really wake the car up, more than any other single modification ... except maybe nitrous or a blower.. The Precision Industries converters, nicknamed the "Vigilante" for GM's, are incredibly popular and run kick ass.. My girlfriend runs one in her car, and uh... how does it work, Fred? :D :D

Haha. It does work good that's for sure, but then again, her whole car works good. We should run from a dead stop some day, for fun (or for $5, since that seems to be the norm, ;) )

Well, at CCB Im on slix, so I think that'd kinda make it on the unfair side. But hey, we can do that too. She does have about 60rwhp on me, lol.

Look, I signed up JUST for you! :D Yes, I would love to do a race... although I normally don't do well at the track. I don't have slicks to race on so I don't ever hook. However, a friendly race is always a good race so how can I turn that down ;)
BTW- Great site! can't believe I didn't sign up sooner... YOU GUYS ROCK!

I found this on ebay. Is this what I need?
This is a Great Stall converter. it has a 2400-2600 stall and is a 700R4. It is good ina 86 and up. This is brand new and I put into my nova decided wanted to do something Different and took it out. It has maybe a 100 miles on it. There is nothing wrong with it. I guarentee it to work. If you have any Questions please e-mail me.

Pretty low stall speed IMHO ... I'd put a minimum of a 2800, a 3200 or 3600 is even better ;)

where is the cheapest place to find the optimal converter that I need? I don't mind traveling for a deal.

Your best bet will probably be internet mail order... Vigi converters aren't exactly cheap though -- $700 brand new... Someone on the LT1edit list is trying to sell one though, it's a Vigilante 3600 with less than 1000 miles and still have one free re-stall available (Precision allows you to change your stall speed once within the first two years for FREE!)... He wants $550 ... He's switching to a TH-350 ...
His name is Tim Williams and his email address is tim@shootmyphoto.com

in my honest opinion, i think the 2400-2600 stall would be just fine for you if you also daily driving the car. if not, then shoot fer tha higher stall, but what you need ta keep in mind is that with a higher stall, you may end up goin down 59 @ 65mph with your engine screaming, just becouse your stall is set so high. if you wer to go with some thing as big as a 3000 stall, i would probobly go with a converter thats about 11" in diameter, just fer daily driveability. im also lookin at it from my point of view (with tha TH350) and tend to ferget that you have one more "gear" than i do. either way i would keep all of that mind if i wer you.
as for the electronic shift improver, ive never used one, but ive never heard of b&m puttin out shit products. i would go for it..... werst case your out $40!!!:) id give it a try and see what happens.

I agree with brains, there are definitly shift kits for you tranny. While i have not done any 700r's, i have done several th350 trannys. They are very easy to install. If you have ever changed your fluid/filter in an auto, you have almost done a shift kit. th350's take me about 1-2 hrs. all you need is a drill and hand tools. Of course you'll need new fluid/filter too. All very cheap. I have a b&m trans pack in my beater truck (76 chevy, 350/th350) and 2nd gear scratches are easy. Mostly i out them in for towing, but all the kits have diffrent levels ie: towing, street/strip/, strip. Call or e-mail if any other questions. kmdracer@yahoo.com 979-543-9219. The folks here are real friendly and I don't seem to get too much ribbing for driving chevys. Welcome to the fun! later, Kevin

slyz28 Ihave seen on some sites that the b4m electronic shift improver won't work with a ls1/46le. I wanted one for the Z but didn't get it for this reason. I out one in the 93 5.0 t-bird and it works great. what ride do you have?

illfated: Normally a high stall is a pain for street duty, but the 700R4 / 4L60E is a lockup application :) Once you're in 3rd or 4th and just cruising, the 'verter locks up ...

I don't know how i missed this thread till now but. My $.02 The tranny contols it shift points and pressure by the TPS if yyou take off your tps and make the attachment holes slotted so you can adjust it you can firm your shifts up to the point of catching seconds on street tires. When you adjust it biring the tps voltage to 1.0 volt at idle and that should put you at close to 5 at WOT you don't want to get above 1.1 at idle or hit the full five volts to early either. I have done tthis to several lt1's and the owner were all happy enough not to buy any other shift improvers.

I am a compulsive buyer, so I stopped buy the local supershop in Okc and bought the B&M shift improver. I guess that if I get some time today to install it, we will all know if it works or not. Damn supershop is only about 6 blocks from where I work. I guess I'll be broke from now on. By the way, where is the pcm?(I've only had the car for 4 days and this is my first f body.)
