For those that haven't heard yet, we finally got the 89 running right and making clean passes. Here's the story...
Got to the track 30 minutes before qualifying and had to scramble to make it in time. On the way to the line Bobby (the starter) stopped me (I was like “oh shit!!!”) but turns out he only wanted to ask for my dial-in since I’d forgotten to put one on. So I think of I time there’s no way I can break out of given the soft tune… “9.8” I tell him, and roll up to the beams. As soon as I staged I engaged the t-brake and floored it… boost started to build slowly… very slowly. 3 seconds later I was at full boost and let’er rip. POW! Wheels came up about 8” and this bitch was on a run like I’ve never felt before… fast, straight and drama-less. I saw the finish coming up and held through the beams then hammered the brakes and baaaaarely made the 1st turnoff. This bitch WILL be packing laundry next time out.
When I got to the ET shack and saw the slip I nearly passed out… 9.55 @ 143 with a 1.45 60’ !!! SWEET!
The next 2 runs were nothing to talk about. 1st one I lined up a little crooked and had to get out of it about 1/3 of the way down (10.1 @ 139), and the 2nd one the t-brake fuk’d up (AGAIN) and I pushed through the beams (no ET).
The 4th and last run of the day I managed to get almost everything right… fuel topped off, ice in the cooler, computer ready to log... only missed one thing… the LID TO THE WATER TANK! Let’s just say Bobby didn’t appreciate what happens when you do a wheels-up launch with a full tank and no lid. I probably dropped 1-2 gallons of water on the track… whoops. Luckily it was hot out and evaporated before the next round. It was also behind me and didn’t affect the run… 9.56 @ 144 with a 1.46 60’ and a full datalog to analyze… woohoo! Officially backed up within 1/100th of a second!
I was stoked to say the least. After looking at the datalog is looks like I’m launching with 8# of boost and pushing between 10 and 11# during the run. What’s amazing to me is that it used to take 15# of boost from the NOVI 2000 to get a 1.45 60’ but these turbos can do it with only 8. Can’t wait to get the a/f ratio out of the low 11s and maybe put more than 16^ of timing to it. Imagine low 9s with 10# of boost… LOL! Well try that next time out, and if all looks good start playing with the boost control in the BS3 to start upping the ante. I’m not going to fool myself and say 8s will be easy… but that’s the goal. Wish me luck!
Here's a video of the last pass a buddy of mine took... including said water offence :trout:
