View Full Version : So I started a new project!

The first part, and probably the trickiest, was getting the jewel home. The previous owner and I had a miscommunication, whereas I thought he said 'huh' when he actually said 'what'.
I hopped into this puppy and went careening through the neighborhood trying to bust the land speed record, but much to my surprise the thing wouldn't get past 55 or so! I pressed the OD on/off button a couple of million times only to be rewarded by nuetral.
Knowing I had to carefully plan my escape route, I decided to make the trek from the northwest side of time to the bat cave on the south east side the best way and potentially the-most-traffic-congestion-in-one-breakdown route by selecting 290, 610, 521, Beltway route. Yes, I was acting brave but a bit anxious as I filled the tank full of fuel before departing. I figured if it caught on fire, I wanted a -good- showing...
Fortunately my plan worked, as I used my cunning and nerves to calculate the flow of traffic through the Galleria area just about right; average speed was a blistering 20 MPH, so second gear was the preferred gear...
The project now sits at home in my drive, an it only took me about a half an hour longer to get home. Not a bad way to start!
O!, out!

Ha! Who da man? YOU da man! I'd charge that guy an extry beer or three for making that trek!
(p.s. I hope you didn't spend a lot on me at the Galleria. )

I got you those pink feathery thongs and stockings at Zone de Erotica; it wasn't too much, least not where you are concerned...

Uh, Mr. Mechanic, Sir? I don't remember those wheels being that dirty when you picked up the truck.
Let's just hope the CD player and Nitrous system don't 'mysteriously' go missing before I get the truck back.

Sorry for the delay in game. I had intended to work on the thing yesterday, but after being up most of the night brutally puking (insert cat image here), and finally getting some sleep at 8am, I jut couldn't bring myself to do anything...
I did manage to get out today and get drenched, but not without accomplishing what I set out to do...
My guts still ache, as do my back, head, and everything I own. I'm down to chicken and stars and ginger ale, but by God I got the tranny out! Woohoo!

Direct cliutches were a bit worn, LOL!

The reverse one way roller had seen better days. I have seen several rollers fail like this, but have never seen a race crack...
Good thing the mechanical diode will replace this mess!

One more of the sprag...

I dunno what in hell I'm loooking at, but it looks expensive to replace!
'Sorry you aren't feeling well, Bro. Please don't do anything else until you can keep at least 10 Coronas down.

I'm sure he'll be OK as soon as he huffs a few cans of brake cleaner
Blue91
11-27-2005, 12:32 AM
That's carb cleaner, not brake cleaner. ;)
Nay, looks like he has the aluminum 1-2 accumulator. From what I've read, that should be replaced with the updated unit to prevent the bore from wearing. Not sure if that was on the "to do" list or not.

I hope you put a "decent" shift kit in that puppy.....
Direct is SMOKED from low line pressure and the sprag failed from "lazy" shifting, IE excessive overlap.
GOOD LUCK, O! (you will need it. :D)

Carb cleaner did help a bit, but being able to eat helped more, LOL! I'll try Corona's later, but still don't feel up to it...
Fred: Got it, and the bigger OD servo; this one had the 'sleeved' version...
Brian: I was thinking about doing the 'Jerry mod's' only per the TCCOA articles (http://www.tccoa.com/articles/tranny/#). As this is in a truck, I don't want to make it too brutal, LOL! Any suggestions or thoughts on a kit? Transgo? I hope a new EPC will help line pressure, and I need to review the Sonnax stuff for any boost valve upgrades.
The thing is still apart, and I hope to get it done some time mid-week. I have the following in will-call at Transtar (which will be picked up tomorrow):
Master rebuild kit (seals, steels, frictions)
Bushings
Bearings
Band
EPC
MLPS
TCC solenoid
Mechanical diode kit (replaces failed sprag)
Overdrive piston
Direct psiton
1-2 piston and cover
I'll probably go ahead and get the Alto direct clutch kit to increase the number of frictions Rickles; I think it runs about $50-55 off the top of my head.
Off to go shop at Sonnax!

Problem's solved.
Rick, some guy came to the door and asked if the Ford pickup in the driveway was for sale (yours), and I said,"Maybe..", and he emptied out his pockets and had enough for a Sonic meal so I said,"Sure..." and traded your keys for his $4.86. No worries, all gone!
J/k...though some guy did come to the front door and ask about it, ya know I wouldn't sell your truck (for 4.86 I would have demanded enough for a super size.) ;)
Besides O! never leaves any car keys sitting out where <s>I</s> the twins can reach them. :racing:

Mr. Book,
Maybe you should have saved yourself some grief and took the offer! I just got back from the parts store, and this sure doesn't look like $700 worth of parts to me, but I trust their math (since they use them new-fangled computaters)...
The box wasn't that impressive, and spread out it's still not. I remember when $700 would buy me a car, six months worth of insurance, and a tune-up. My, times have a changed...

For $700 you could have bought a couple gnetly used V6 trannys out of F-150s with all the parts you just upgraded.

ROFLMAO! I hate to disappoint you Rickles, but I did not finish the install as I thought I would. I am short fluid, DS, starter, converter nuts. I'll let Jason explain why and how I got off course (hint: beers, food, and, uhm, some creative engineering! :D )

I tell you what, it wasn't five minutes after we had that out of the back of the truck, givin' her a test spin, when one of the local hooligans called RXRacer out. As any true sportsman, Racer put the double smack-down on this kid: once from a stop and once from a 1 MPH roll. I was proud of my boy for whoopin' that seven year old, and we yelled at the kid as he rode off to bring his big sister -and- his lunch money next time! I guess one of the other 'locals' caught wind of the ruckus and rolled by on his razor scooter a bit later, casting use the evil eye but scurying away when J hit the street. Pah-unks!
So, in prep for the next call-out(s) (thinking about the eight year-old on her bike; that'll be tough!), we whipped out the Sawzall and removed all non-essentials (brakes, kick stand, superfluous tube), then lightened the foot plate by swiss-cheesing it. -If- the locals get wary about the lightening holes, I will add new non-skid to hide them from everybody, unless we land on our lids (quite likely!)...
We need to pick a color. ScooterRacer thinks blue, but I want something a little more sedate; grandma-ish. Suggestions?

'Sounds like it's fast enough to be painted BRIGHT RED. The "grandma" appearance won't work as I'm sure word has gotten around the neighborhood about "that Jason kid" and his Big Block Scooter.
BTW, I hope both of you have had your tetanis shot. That thing is a doctor bill on wheels!
'Sounds like you had a well-deserved break from the tranny.

I gotta ask though. How did ya'll 'un-freeze' the bearings? I sprayed a gallon and a half of 10W-40 around the axles and it would still lock up after a couple of sprints.
Otis!
12-02-2005, 10:56 AM
Ancient Chinese secret! We backed the jam nuts off, lubed the thing up with slick'em, then readjusted the nuts to provide -perfect- drag. Yea, that's it! (The back tends to 'autolock' though; will diagnose when I break it down to paint it)...
Should I put the TSSRacing or MustangV8 sticker on the handle crossbar? Hmmm, maybe both? TSS: Tough Scooter Suckers; True Street Scooter? Yea! True Street Scooter it is!
BTW, the truck has four forward gears, one reverse gear, and no leaks in the 4 mile maiden voyage (as Jess is my witness!). I guess I read the destructions right? :retard:

I agree 1000%. My clutch knee still hurts off and on after a spill from one of the original Razor scooters. I stay far, far away from them now. Be careful.

Post Alvin-trip update:
I drove the thing to Alvin some fifteen miles there and back to go eat lunch with Michael, dump tranny fluid, and restock on carb cleaner (truck required for the pallet!). Oh yea, and to make sure the thing worked! It shifts pretty good in almost all cases; nice clean upshifts and downshifts, kicks down well, but for some odd reason at WOT in first it won't shift until you barely let off the throttle. If you apply 15/16 throttle, all is well; just odd at WOT (sounds like it hits engine rev limiter, and it might, LOL!).
When I got into Alvin, I was clicking along a four lane stretch at my usual 1.5x posted speed limit (Admit it! You do it to! And I was 'testing'; yea, that's it! Testing!) when all of a sudden grandma comes out of a side street on the left, across three lanes of traffic, and plants himself right smack in frn of me at 25MPH. No problem; I drive around him with aplomb and test Rick's horn, which works (after you find the button)! Issue resolved, so I thought. At the next light, grandpa pulls up behind me, puts his little Ranger in park, opens his door and takes one foot out of the truck so he can stand fully in his open window and proceeds to yell "This road wasn't built just for you you know!", so I responded "And it wasn't built for you either..." as I kept my right eye on the light. Luckily the light changed or I might of <s>gotten my ass kicked</s> had to have a stern talking to grandpa. [Note: Rick, I'd be careful in Alvin next time you go rolling through! I hear the geriatric gang in Alvin is -tough-!]
Drove the truck home after dropping oil and picking up carb cleaner, and all seems well. Coming onto 1128 from 6 the thing kicked down into first at a 10-15MPH rolled and 'urped' second a wee bit. Nice!
Cliff's notes:
Truck drives good; all gears, no leaks (still)...
O! harassed by old man...
Truck got a second gear scratch...

...out to ride the scooter...
