Finally got the transmission back in the car last night! Been out for like two months. Lovelady did the repairs this time and found the problem.
The problem was that the last builder installed the pump gear backwards. The gear has a bezeled edge and a straight edge. The converter is bezeled and has to seat against this gear. So the gear was forcing out on the converter and back on the rest of the parts in the transmission. This damaged a lot of the new clutches that I had put in and some other internal parts. We had to replace those clutches and the front pump.
The upgrades: New Trans King reverse manual Trans Brake valve body. Of course the new clutches and pump as well. Used Trans King 9" 4200 rpm converter (very few passes on it) with anti-baloon plates, brazed fins, etc...

So whats left? Got to wire up the transbrake and top off the fluid, thats it! I finished everything else last night around midnight. Car is off the stands and ready for me to finish when I get home.

Question: James told me that in order to engage reverse and back the car up, that I would have to hold the transbrake button. Is that correct? Also what are you guys using for a transbrake button? The TCI button is rather expensive IMO at $55, so I just bought a cheap 20 amp pushbutton and will mount it on a bracket attached to the shifter handle. Do I need to mount some type of relay inline with the button or can I just run a hot 12V to one side of the button and the other side to the brake solenoid?

That's correct about the tbrake button to go in reverse. That's just the way Tranz King designs them. I have a PA reverse manual VB and it doesn't require that. BTW, Joseph has the same VB as you do.

As for a tbrake button, Joseph has a bling bling Hurst Pistol Grip shifter with a button on the top of the handle. I've got a B&M "T" shaped handle w/ a button that goes where your thumb rests and it's screwed on to my Pro Stick shifter. Fred has a button on a coiled up telephone cord that he just tosses to the side when he lets go of the button.

I ran a relay on mine only because I didn't think the switch in my t-handle could take any kind of power load through it. I don't know how the others powered theirs up.

You will have to hold the button to back up with the Trans King brake. I don't know if that is true with other brand brakes. I don't have a relay on mine and have never had problem. I think you have a c-4, if you do make sure that the bracket that holds the solenoid in is centered. If it is not, when the solenoid comes out after releasing the button it will bind on the bracket and wont want to engage the next time you try to use it.

Hey Ben,

I am in the process of putting on my afr heads, and I need to regear as well so if I can get every thing done and make some tuning passes I might make it. I am sorry to say that my car gets put on the back burner because I am to busy at the shop, which is a good thing it just slows down the mustang progress.

I hear you man... I've been busy traveling a lot for work. It's kind of hard to spend time with the family and then find time to work on the car when I'm not even in the same state (in Ohio this week).

Thanks guys,
Harvey, I didn't install the brake, Lovelady did it all. Guess I'll cross that road when it comes.

I'll try the cheap-o button I bought first. I'm not depending on the brake for racing until I weld up the tq boxes and axle tubes, I may try it out a couple times this weekend, but probably won't race on it.

Mine has a button on the shifter like Fred and Ben and is wired directly to the t-brake. JMHO, a relay is just one more thing that can stick or not function and cost you a race. Also, depending on the quality of the relay, it can cause erratic reaction times. The wires coming out of my t-brake are very small, leading me to believe it doesn't take much to power it.

lovelady told me a relay on the t-brake is not needed. just wire it to a 12 v source. when you start getting fancy and having your twostep, n2o and t-brake run off of one switch get some relays.

The nitrous is on a WOT switch and will probably stay that way since I can simply reach up to my switch panel and flip it on/off with the toggle switch too. The two step isn't hooked up yet, but I'll probably just tie it to the transbrake button when I get to that point.
