Ok, I now have my grubby paws on

1 - 31 spline diff (from an Expedition)
2 - FMS 31 spline axles

Q. Does anybody have a part number for long studs (too lazy to hunt)

Q. Switching to this diff, is it safe to believe that it will be a 'bolt in', meaning no need to re-shim?

Without knowing exactly how many miles are on the bearings in the rear, I would go ahead and swap all of them out since you will already be in there. Tiz what I did when I built up my rear (of the car).

I took my chances and did just a straight up swap. I bought my carrier from Martin Keefer. It was the 31 spline motorsport that he ran in his coupe. Bought the axles 2nd hand but new from Larry Sample. Left my pinion gear in, mounted the ring gear, and slapped it together. Wiggled the carrier a bit and had very little play in it (which felt exactly like the one I pulled out). Haven't had a problem since.

Well hell then, that's the ticket Chris!

The unit has some rust on it, so replacing all of the bearings is a must. I'm going to put new clutches in it as well.

Hey Chris,

While that diff is out, I'd repack it with extra clutches. I think a rebuild kit is $60. I've also got a dial indicator to check for runout. Luckily when I went from a 28 to a 31 t-lock my runout only increased .001" so it was a true bolt-in for me. Hopefully yours will be the same way.

ROFLMAO!

Guff, I'd suggest welding the tubes, adding a girdle (LPW my fav!), solid pinion spacer, and main cap studs for insurance...

Is it wrong for me to like that picture? I feel, uhm, 'compromised'? :nono:

Jeez there O, maybe I should just use one of those extra 9 inches from under your trailer :retard:

Ya never know when you'll need to tow a Sherman tank, so a strong rear end is very important

LOL! Well, while you have the thing apart you might as well do some stuff to it. It only takes a couple of hours to pull the rear, then you can weld the tubes easily...

I'm keeping the axles on my trailer! No telling when I might have to evac again!

O!

I have some 3" ARP studs. Used them for about 6 months on my stock rear end. Bought new studs for the built rear end so I would have least possible downtime.

$15 shipped? I'll try to find some pics I took when I tried to sell them before...
