Designing a pergola, and struggling with overall height and scale. It 'looks' like a lower beam height of 77" is proportional, but I dread making it a couple inches too short and having somebody whack their gourd all the time (unless you just want to!)...
How tall are guys, for comparison sake? Short people are not required to respond, LOL! Not to discriminat against short people, but they ain't got no reason to live... :D
Bonus Q: Who sang it, in what year?

Pergola is one of those wood walkways with the overlaps on the ends.
Otis must be in luv or something to be designing/building one of those
(damn, I'm kinda weirded out that I know what a damn Pergola is)

Ohhh, a PERGOLA...thas one of those porch thingies that you can't afford to put a roof on, right? :-)
J/K!
77-78" is normal height for a home ceiling, so, I don't think that you'd be wrong to gowith 77" Personally, I'd go with a 96" (8 foot) cross beam, as that would add to the "openess" that a pergola is all about.
