Computer geeks, this is your chance to save O!'s hide!

We have an older comp with an ECS K7S5A motherbored. The LAN took a dive some time ago, most likely related to the very common brown-outs in the local area. Read: no Internet connexion (or however you gUyS and GaLs spell et!)! :roxxer:

Anyhoo, I have no idea of processor speed, but do know it has one (1) stick of SDR RAM, somewhere in the 56-128 range...

In your humble opinions (seeking IMHO, for the techno-speak-haves), is it worth screwing with? We need a utilitarian device to allow on-line study so that 'sugar britches' can update and reinstate her legal-eze. We ain't got a lot of mun-nay, so making a sound decision right now based on opinions is close enough for me (LOL @ myself on that one!), LOL!

Beyond that, anybody know anybody selling or offering for trade (no sexual favors!) a computer of 'sufficient' quality to allow high speed downloading of <s>nekkid chicks</s> study guides/courses and have the abillity to <s>Photoshop large penises on me</s> do some semi-graphic-intensive documents?

TWMSTOoCP (Taken white male seeking technical opinions on computer problems) LF STMIPWoBtB (solutions to my immediate problems without breaking the bank)

Thanks for looking, and please help an idiot who knows nothing about suenamee's find a suitable solution...

O!
...well, I might trade for sex, IF the equipment is right...

O!

I went through the same dilemma last year with my PII 400 MHz POS. Decided it was cheaper to upgrade.

Check out: http://www.gotapex.com/

They list the best deals going from Dell.

I have a Dimension 2400 with a 2.8G P4, 256M RAM, 80G drive, CD-RW, blah, blah, blah...no monitor for $349 after rebate.

Works like a champ.

I go by the rule of 1 when it comes to MB's.
If the Mother Board/Chipset is older then a year, upgrade if it has issues. Computer parts/sellers/vendors are in abundance now a days. Not to mention all the new technology that literally comes out every day at next to nothing (well in comparison to just 5-7 years ago) Hell I rmember when a 60GIG hard drive was huge for a PC. Now you can get them in a Laptop! Large HD's are so cheap and plentiful now that the old FDisk Utility (yeah some of us till format with them) won't work on HD's larger then 64Gigs. I had to download the updated version to format a neighbors not to long ago.
Processors, motherboards, towers, Hd's, DDR, SDR and I/O devices are so well priced now, my son has a better computer then I'm on now! LOL :D

Fine, Ben, just wait until the next time several large trees fall in your front yard...You're gonna look awful funny rolling them off in Courtney's wagon ;)

Dudes, I'm getting a Dell!

Thanks for the link, Darrell! I'm warming up the ol' cc to order a 3000 now (considered the 4700 but it didn't seem worth the extra $100).

And thanks to all others for proving, once and for all, that YOU WERE RIGHT, OTIS, AND I WAS WRONG (but I refuse to admit about what  )

...besides I never could resist those lawbreakers (http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/delldude1.html)...

O!, that system might do you fine if all you need to do is internet surfing and Office related applications. I would upgrade the memory...it supports up to 1GB. You can also get a PCI LAN card to replace the one that went out. Honestly, if it's working ok for you application wise, I see no reason to upgrade (edit: I mean buy a new computer), especially if money is tight right now.

Doh, looks like I was just a bit slow (must be my computer lol!). I like building my own because of all the extra crap that gets put on Dell/HP/etc ends up killing the performance.

Rusty,

Help me out with the PCI LAN card; I bought a cheapy from Wally World as my first attempt, but it no worky. Not sure if/how to configure around the built-in unit. The RAM upgrade doesn't bother me, but the lack of LAN does...

Maybe we can trade a wee bit of labor and have a look see? I wouldn't mind trying to fix it if the $$$ can be kept low; any thoughts?

O!

BTW, thanks Jess! :D
