I went out to HMP (local 1/8th mile strip) for a little test and tune. Last Friday, I tried to run at HRP in the 1/4 mile and found a major fuel leak from the fuel solenoid that put a quick end to those plans. I fixed the problem this week and was ready to give it another shot tonight. To make a long story short I ran a 6.82@ 100.5 with a 1.53 60'. This is almost a full .2 quicker than it has ran before in the 1/8th mile.

The down side is that sometime during the run I broke the oil pump driveshaft in two! I killed the motor right after the traps and pulled over on the return road to pull and read a plug and when I started the car back up it had zero oil pressure, I ended up pushing it back to the pits and when we pulled the distributor half of the oil pump shaft hit the pan. I'll pull the motor in the next week or so and inspect the damage. Hopefully I can get it back together and make the FFW weekend event in Ennis next month.

6.82 ain't bad for a little 302 on the juice though!

WTG B! :thumb:

Straighten her out a little bit and I'd say you'd be getting another PB real soon!

The shortblock has somewhere around 160,000 on it and the shaft was a stock piece, just like everything else in the bottom end of the motor. If I can get by with new bearings and make the rest of the year that would be great.

I wouldn't even mess with the bearings if the stuff looks ok. If you change them, most likely the crank needs to be turned, then stuff starts adding up, like going ahead and honing the cylinders and going with new rings, etc etc.

I'd throw another pump and shaft in it (assuming the rest looks fine) and run it some more!

It's a GOOD THING you had a stock shaft. It was the fuse that let go before (hopefully) any more damage occurred.

He said last night he thought he heard the motor making a knocking sound before he shut it off. New bearings might be a must.

Congrats on the PB and sorry about the breakage. I hope I haven't jinx'd anyone with my breakage!
I had a shaft break on my stock shortblock too and tried replacing just the pump (with it in the car, what a PITA that was), but I heard a knocking when I cranked it back up, turns out it scuffed up a couple pistons and stiffened the wrist pins so the pistons were slapping in the cylinder.

Gee thanks Carl, that is exactly what I wanted to hear! Hopefully it is like my truck and I just spun a rod bearing. It sounded like rod knock to me, the car didn't run for more than 20 seconds or so after I found the problem but something is definetly not right.
