View Full Version : Poll: To exhaust or not to exhaust...that is the question

JeB told me last night that I really NEED to put some some sort of muffler on my car.

On one hand I like it being nice and quite (and inconspicous)...on the other it would be nice to have a meaner sound sometimes. I have no doubt with a few other mods the car can get down to a low 11 and still have the stock cat back.

Opinions puh-leazzze

well ... you could install a set of dumps. you know ... theyre kinda like a 't' you hook a cable up to and you can open up your exhaust from inside the car. i think i saw them in jc whitney. only thing is when i was looking at them i couldnt find them in 3" id, but i dont know what size your exhaust is.

Ummm...no thanks. I want it to sound GOOD...not dump truck-ish :D

well ... i dont see why it would sound much different than running w/o mufflers ... maybe a little louder cuz it will be closer to the engine when the exhaust gets out

CHANGE YOUR EXHAUST!! Meaner (sounding) is better - that's my motto!

I actually agree with JeB on something? What's this world coming to???!!!

I agree with JB also. Its cool and all to have a stealth car with a quiet exhaust, but damn!! I mean, the car sounds like its balls have been cut...:D . I say go ahead and do it dude.

i must have misread your original post. i was under the impression you were running straight pipes w/o mufflers. =)

I voted to keep what you have. It's "aftermarket" from the factory, no? So it's not like you'd be adding any real HP with swapping, but only changing "sound"? If that's the case, I'd stick with what you have, b/c after a while, a loud exhaust in a daily driver gets annoying. Plus, it will draw more attention to your car by cops, etc.

Just my opinion, spend the $$ elsewhere.

That's my line of thinking Fred. I doubt that I'll bolt any HP over the stock components (which is actually an SLP muffler system) so it would be purely for sound. Unfortunatley I haven't heard many LS1's that sound good. They always seem to get that crop duster rasp :hmm:

My vote, which holds little value, is leave it as is. I ran my stock cat-back on my bomb until about three months ago, and never regretted being able to hear what I was thinking...

Friend of mine had a Borla on his; the worst sounding car I've ever heard, IMHO...

You can't attract 'suckers' if you give subtle hints you may be serious. "No, really; it's my girlfriend's car and she'll kill me if she catches me doing this..."

Get a cutout!

Yeah, I don't think you'll pick up any HP with just a muffler swap. Now putting on a cutout would net you a bunch from what I hear/see at the track. The cutouts that are used on most LS1's are the type that you just climb under there and unbolt three bolts to take the cap off. Not the cable type that you see in JC Whitney, those things don't seal very well.

I say put the borla (there kit puts one tip befroe the muffler and come with different restrictor plates to control noise level) on but run the right side closed so it all goes through the muffler they sound pretty ggod that way and stay fairly wuiet and if you ever want to oopen it up it is 3 bolts and put in the restrictor plate (or none) that you want for the noise level you are looking for.

The Borla's like $600 and sounds like ass

Yeah I hate the way the Borla sounds, especially on an LT1/LS1.

I'm with Fred, the only gain you'll get is in dB.
Also like Neighbors described, it's easier to attract suckers with it sounding stock. I think I may even use the girlfriend line he threw in! :D Though seems everywhere I go in the Alief area, someone knows my car now. (Not many Leroy McGuyuvers out there I guess)
