View Full Version : Tech day: line lock install on a Fox (Shane, Fred, Kyle, Robert)...

Gentlemen,
After listening to Shane whine (:))for the last few weeks about his line lock install, and all the discussions we've had individually about these matters, I think the best approach is to have a Tech Day where all four of you do simultaneous installs, at my house.
I will be creating a small shopping list of the essential items soon (<s>later today</s> now!). I would like you all to have your parts in-hand prior to setting a date, as I cannot afford the real estate to have another car stuck in the driveway.
I expect you each to help each other, with my flitting about like the fairy princess (well, maybe not! :D). I will help/assist/discuss with what little I know. Once a date is set, it'll be logged on the calendar. Right now I'm thinking mid-August (nice, huh?), unless all four of you have the line-lock already. If not, please buy the Biondo unit from Summit ASAP, and we'll shop locally for fittings.
Let's start at the MC:
For the three port guys (Shane and Robert?): I have the M10 x 1.0 set screw in stock. These are hard to find, and I bought twenty (20) when I got mine. Price is $.72/each...We'll remove the lower line that goes to the left front, and plug the port. No work required for the two port guys (except Kyle; you may want to redo your lines (compression fittings?)
At the prop valve: We'll disconnect the rear lower line that supplies the right front brake, and let hang. After mounting the line-lock, we'll bend a new line to go from the prop to the inlet of the LL.
Downstream of LL: With correct adapter in the bottom of the LL, we'll have to cut, bend, and reflare both lines (maybe only one?) to make the connections. Not a big issue, but a bit time consuming due to the details...Plumbing is done after bleeding (you're on your own there, LOL! I hate brake fluid!)
Wiring:
I assume you all want to wire the thing to the cruise off button (like mine is done), so I'll head that route. We'll remove the lower steering column cover, and cut the light blue/black wire and insert a microswitch as a function control. Your choice of location, but I have mine in the lower cover, FWIW. The switch will complete the ground in both the LL and cruise circuit; whichever mode it's in...
You'll need a relay somewhere, be it mounted in the engine compartment or under the seat (for the MSD Digital6 inclined). Wiring of the relay will be on a per application basis, but shouldn't be too hard (just time consuming)...
Shopping list:
1 - Biondo line-lock
2 - fasteners to mount the line lock
2 - 3/16" brake lines, 12" long minimum, with inverted flares on both ends
1 - Fitting, 90* 3/16" female inverted flare to 1/8" male pipe
1 - Fitting, tee 3/16" female inverte flare x 1/8" male pipe
2 - Fitting, tube 3/16" inverted flare (just the fitting, like that on the brake lines)
1 - Relay, standard 15-30 amp (like your fuel pump relay)
6-8 - connector, female spade (to connect to relay)
2 - connector sets; spade or bullet, to connect LL to wiring
1 - terminal, ring (hole size to fit LL mounting fasteners for grounding )
1 - Switch, micro (Radio Shack)
1 - quart of brake fluid
2 - cans of SuperTech carb cleaner (you know it!)
Wire: #16AWG and #14AWG, a couple colors of each (I have some black that will be free)
The goal is to get you guys going before Fun Ford, AND help me finish the Word document I started a couple of years ago to document this project. I have a CAT5 dropped to the garage, and will have the laptop and camera there and handy.
If things go well, I'll have Debra whip us up a BIG pot of deer chili (ask Fred about it...). If not, it's pizza or BBQ...
Questions, comments, concerns, criticisms? I'd like to get this done in one day, and ask that in return you guys assist me in a 'Tech Day' of my own in the near future; sound fair?
Chris
BTW, Shane is the coordinator of this, so get with him about details, etc...

I was wondering if anybody was going to respond...LOL!
OK Brent, you get the side drive :D! Now I just gotta figure where to park all of my junk (ah yes; the school!).
Do you have your LL yet B? Sorry I forgot you; Shane and I were talking about this last night on URC, and the TD was born...
Anybody else have coments? You guys let me know when the parts are in stock...
Nay!

Brent can most likely have my spot.... I will come down to spectate and takes notes for when I do mine, but I doubt I will be able to afford to buy the LL before that Tech Date. Who knows what will come up by then though.

Thanks for offering your place and time Chris. Should be a good one.

LOL! Dang, I may have to rent some space, and assign parking...
You need this too Bubba? If so, please gather your parts and head south...
...hmm, wonder if I should hire a valet'?

I'm down, I think I'm gonna try and install my digital 6 at the same time. I've got a couple of other things that might get done also. I'll call Texas Performance and see how much they charge for L.L.'s, If it's the same price I'll get mine local. Chris are any of the cruise control buttons momentary contacts, or are they all on/off?

LOL! Don't turn your back on him fellas! :P
Chris...little confused on the wiring part...i.e. the microswitch deal. Whenever you push the cruise off, it ties the blue/black wire to chassis ground. Just tie a splice into that wire and hook it up to the primary/coil (low-current) side of the relay. The ground is enough to hold the relay in.
When you say microswitch, do you mean wiring one in as an activation switch (Like a N2O system?).
Wish I could be there to help out!
/me counts the days till he's free! :)

No Darrell, I use the microswitch as a 'function' switch. Depending on which way it's thrown, it either completes the ground for the LL relay, or completes the ground, thereby deactivating, the cruise control setting. My cruise still works, and although I don't use it, I wanted to be able to, LOL!
I guess you could just splice into the ground circuit, but I was afraid to send a cuurent back through the cruise circuit and screw the cruise control amp/modualtor/brain box up...That's an option for you non-CC guys...

So what do you think about july 28th that's 13 days away, if Chris is available on that Sunday I think two weeks should be plenty of time for anyone who really wants to do this to get the relatively small list of parts together. (Summit can have the LL to you in two days). I'm just trying to get a firm date because I, like most of us have a very full schedule, and the further ahead I plan is usually directly proportional to the success of what I am planning.

Well, go ahead and tell me I screwed up (okay - that's enough).
I bought the Hurst Roll Control from Summit for $110.00:
<center>http://store.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/large/HUU-1745000.jpg</center>
and the install kit (containg various lengths of line and fittings - another $40 smackers).
Other than the humongus price difference ($40.00 from Summit for the Biondo),
<center>

is there a 'technical' reason you prefer the Biondo's over the Hurst?
Thanks.

I'm a member of PoMoFo: $150 vs. $40 is about 110 reasons, LOL!
I like the cleaner (read 'stealth') looks of the Biondo, the extra ports in the Hurst are just additional potential for leaks, and if I can't tell the LL is on, do you think a light will get my attention? :D
The Biondo claims to be rebuildable, as I'm sure the Hurst is. The location of the inlet and outlet ports on the Biondo also jived well with my scheme...
Nothing against the Hurst, but I just don't like it (and that's based on opinion, so please, Mr. Hurst, don't send the goons after me...please?)
My secretary informs me nothing is scheduled for the weekend of the 27; if you guys can have your stuff in hand, or on order by the Friday, I'll pencil you in...
Nay!
Tech day number two: Dismantle the sub! (it was on the calendar, yet nobody reads the freakin' calendar, LOL!)

As for the tech day, I think I am going to have to pass if it is on Sunday. No way I can make it to Alvin and back for church. If it's on a Saturday I am game. But you guys decide because I will just be an extra pair of hands this time.
Chris, let me know whatn you want to start tearing down the "party wagon". I'm game for that.

It would be difficult for me to make the 27th. Money being the issue of getting all the necesary lines, fittings, and such. I thought the middle of Ausgust is when we origionally wanted to make this hapen. I dunno.

I know it would be hard for me to get everything together by the end of the month. I'm with Shane and think that sometime after the dynoday in mid August might be the way to go...
Chris, you name the date and time and I'm there for a little deconstructive surgery!

I have this date tentatively set for August 17th. Any comments/concerns?
The 10th is not good for me, as Debra will be out all day...
Only other option is August 24th...

Yes Shane, I've seen the posts, and you've had a month to get it on the calendar :D
No, I won't be able to 'check it out', as my wife's out, and I'll be babysitting. Thanks for the invite though...
BTW, the purpose of the calendar is to allow, at a glance, some means of planning for all. You've obviously busted your hump for the dyno day, and it would be a shame for somebody to miss it that uses the calendar...

Teague,
First, glad to see you here!
Secondly, the calendar has a button in the upper right; just click it to review what's happening. I try and update it, as do all of us, on a regular basis...Kind of a planning tool for all...
The LL day is scheduled for August 17, but to be honest, I've yet to do a '98. I think that in itself would qualify for a 'special' day, LOL! The ABS puts the fear of plumbing into many, an I'd want to study it closely before committing...(now that I have a manual, it's possible :D)
You're more than welcome to come down and watch/heckle; I have the wife whipping up a triple batch of deer chile...mmm, mmmm, good!

Bringing this back from the dead...
With the help of Troy (TxBandit), I've finished the line lock install on my 95 GTS.
I originally used this thread (and Senor Naybors' parts list) as a reference and went and bought parts. I made the assumption (yes, I know) that Ford wouldn't have changed anything on the brake system from 93 to 94.
Well...I was wrong. Dead wrong. And to complicate matters further, the GTS doesn't have ABS, so my install is different than 98% of SN-95 Line Lock installs that are documented on the interweb.
What I found is that on the SN-95, the passenger front brake line and the rear brake line go FORWARD from the prop valve, under the radiator core support and down the passenger-side frame rail. If I had ABS, the driver's front would do the same in order to reach the ABS module.
But, my driver's front comes from the REAR of the prop valve. So, I end up with the two lines that I need to "T" together coming from opposite ends of the car with barely enough length to make them reach. Fun, Fun, Fun.
To start off, I found that the fittings in the prop valve are different than the Fox. Are they 3/8"-24 like most commonly-available brake lines? Of course not. Are they M10-1.0 like most Japanese OEMs? Don't be stupid. (Although Ford DID switch to M10-1.0 beginning in 1996). They are M12-1.0. Who else uses these fittings? No one, apparantly.
The adapter fitting I ended up using was a Weatherhead 7974, which is a M12-1.0 to 3/8-24 adapter. It's available from NAPA (The main store off the Hardy Toll Road in Aldine, to be precise.) Thanks to Troy for making a run by there on his way over here to help.
I'll post some pics of the completed install soon, but wanted to get the adapter part number and some notes "on the record" before I forgot...
Otis!
10-17-2005, 08:11 AM
Holy carp D! I have never liked Ford's mess of brakeline fittings, threads, etc., but man, it sounds like they went all out for you here! Glad you got it sorted out, and please, when you're done w/Tyro, send him south for a couple of weeks...
:D
