Since I relocated my battery to the rear of my GT, the car has been having trouble starting when it was hot. Cranks great when cold, but after a short drive and the engine getting up to temperature, it would click a couple times, then eventually I could get it to start. I wasn't sure if it was a ground problem or what, so I ran a couple extra ground wires off the engine block and relocated my battery ground. Still no luck.
Well, I picked up a mini starter from AJ Harlan aka Stangfun. I believe this is the starter that comes on the 92-95 mustang 5.0s. It is a lot smaller in size than my factory 90 starter, but has a separate round coil/solenoid attached to it.
The wiring is a little different, but not hard, you simply relocate the main power wire that goes to the starter to the other side of the starter solenoid, then run a 14 gauge or thicker wire to the original side of the solenoid to the bracket on the starter.
This starter is about 5 lbs or so lighter than the original and has much more clearance around my MAC longtube headers (ie was a whole lot easier to put into place than the original).
I went for a quick drive yesterday and got the engine completely up to temp, got back home and she fired right up without a hiccup.
Thanks AJ for the starter
They can be bought at Williams Auto Salvage for around $15 for anyone interested (you will probably need a core to exchange).

Good post, Carl.

Do you think the old starter just wasn't getting enough amperage (or whatever those thingys are called) because of the extra cable length?

Mind throwing together a quick and dirty MSPAINT schematic of that? The same issue is what's causing me to hold off on my battery relocation.

What kind of battery are you using Carl? I know that by adding the extra cable it puts quite a bit more effort onto the battery. When moving the battery to the rear a stout battery is a must.

Just a cheap-o autozone Duralast battery. The next one I get will be an optima red top I'm sure.
I don't think the problem is due in total to the relocation of the battery to the trunk. Before the battery was moved, I would notice that the starter would kind of wind down a little when it was hot, just the move to the back took away the extra current it was getting through the closer/shorter wires to the starter.

I think the problem was mainly due to the starter being so close to the longtube headers. It was basically up against one of the tubes, so it was getting badly heat soaked and not wanting to crank over very easily when hot. The smaller starter gave me at least an inch of clearance from said header and is a whole lot easier to get in/out around the headers and k-member.
