View Full Version : "Hep Me! Somebody Hep Me!"

Well, leave it up to me to screw up my pc shit (me not no pc stuff and stuff).
Thanks to something I did, I no longer have access to my CD drives (one 'ragular' and one burner) nor my ZIP drive (having a ZIP drive should tell you how old my pc is). Explorer only recognizes C:, D:, and A:.
I've gone through the Device Manager, Regedit, XQ, TweakUI, left a message for Mr. Gates, and NOTHING will gettem back!
I've turned the "autorun" value to '1' in my registry.
I've started the computer with disks in both drives (1 and 2 at a time).
I've omitted the use of as many mother-board drivers (and others) as I can and load them back one at a time to see if there is a change. Nothing.
I don't know wheather to scratch my head or Nancy's ass!
Can anyone 'hep' me (no, not with scratching Nancy's ass - but pc help)?
Much appreciated.
BTW, I'm running 98SE - and around like a chicken with it's head on fire!

I have seen 98 not find them in explorer at first but ry this go into internet explorer and key in d:\ (or whatever drive you have a disk in) into the addresse bar and see if it will pick it up then if it does then it should have found it in regular explorer too.

Since I'm the local nerd (your words, not mine), I'll try to hep ya.
First, can you open the tray to the CDRom(s)? This signifies you have power.
Next, Go into Device Manager and see if the drives show up there. Are they there? If so, do they have an exclamation or X over them?
Finally, try booting into safe mode (press F8 early in the boot sequence). Once booted, go into Device Manager again and look at your CDRom(s). Sometimes there's more than the correct number listed. If this is the case, remove the extras. Having more than 1 CDRom sometimes freaks out Windows and they don't show up.
What kind of computer is it? Have you been messing around inside it at all?

What about 'mapping' the drives in explorer? (just talking out of my ass - I am computer illiterate)

Technically (Unless I misunderstand your post), you can't map a CD. It comes up automatically like hard drives. Same for the Zip Drive.
So, Rick, did you try to fix it and end up screwing it up more? :)

[/i]yes, there is power to the tray as it opens nicely to hold my beer

the drives do not show up, so no 'X'

Did this. The correct number was there: the following tree shows what I saw:
"
COMPUTER
__CDROM
__HP CD ROM
__ HP CD-Writer+ 8290
__ TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-M1302
__DISK DRIVES
__GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE 46
__GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE 47 (my note: hmm…remove this one?)
__GENERIC NEC FLOPPY DISK
__IOMEGA ZIP 100
.
.
.
. __Hard disk controllers
__Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller Controller" (my note: this appears to be a driver for Windows 95 according to http://www.support.brio.hp.com/briosupport/level4/161bdf508en.txt.html)
Also, from http://support.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/al440lx/al_inst.htm I found this info:
· “Why doesn’t my CD-ROM or second IDE hard drive work with Windows* 95?
There are two known issues involving CD-ROM or secondary hard drives:
o The retail version of Microsoft Windows 95 may not recognize the Intel® 82371AB PIIX4 IDE controller used on Intel motherboards, causing the BIOS to disable the secondary IDE channel. This can result in IDE devices (such as CD-ROM drives) not being detected or disappearing after the system is rebooted. A utility is available to update the MSHDC.INF file and resolve the issue.
o Windows 95 also may fail to recognize a CD-ROM drive that does not comply with the ATAPI specification. A technical advisory covers this issue for Intel motherboards using the 82371AB PIIX4 IDE controller. “
On a whim, I decided to launch their fix for 95. 'Found out that 98 is also listed with the “infinst_enu” utility –but only after downloading it (http://support.intel.com/design/software/drivers/platform/4301/inf_utility/infinst_enu.htm)
What kind of computer is it?
Inteva (Home shopper special I'm sure) with Intel PentiumIII
Have you been messing around inside it at all?
I added a fire-wire about 6 months ago - didn't have trouble until recently
So, after much ado, I now have access to my built-in DVD drive (D:\), However, I still do not have acces to my CD burner (H:\).
I can deal with this for now. I needed to re-install Acad and I can do that through my D:\ drive.
Thank you very much Rusty for jogging my nogging on 'safe-mode' (although I can't edit the properties - I can at least view the settings)
You da man!
/me offers his Laasssst sip of bud-light @ next CCB ifn you want it :D
Thanks for everyone's help!!!!!!!! (you can count on a few more help-desk posts from this idiot later down the road)
