View Full Version : turbo kit update pics:

here are the most recent update pics... I decided to make the
kits "drag" oriented... no accessories... and utilizing a driver's
side alternator setup (which I can supply)
this freed up a LOT of room for the turbos... this should be a 100%
bolt-on affair... no cutting of inner fenders, no welded cast iron,
nice straight 45* shot on the oil drains, etc.

shot of the downpipe... bolts to factory or offroad pipe for shorty headers.

detail of the downpipe flange where it bolts to the hpipe (compared to a header flange)
hope to have the driver's side done soon... first kit should be ready for sale pretty soon!

it actually looks worse than it is, but you're right... plug access is definately "compromised"
BUT... there are a couple that can be pulled quickly for tuning, and the rest can be gotten w/ a plug socket and an open end wrench... it LOOKS painful, but it's not THAT bad, and it's still better than an INCON setup!
and... every time you think about the plug access say to yourself one of three things:
1. "it could be worse... it could be a modular!" (not that mods have bad plug access, but you also aren't going to be fitting twin turbos under the hood anytime soon, and if you did, the friggin' shortblock would go boom in short time)
2. "it could be worse... it could be an F-body!" ('nuff said)
and 3. "420+ RWHP without an intercooler, on pump gas, and on a BONE STOCK fuelie long block"
:D

man, I LOVE NA power...
but, just to help me sell some kits, care to tell how much $$$ you've got in that engine? :D
Todd laid down 469hp to the wheels w/ a stock 302, E303 cam, stock E7 heads w/ the exhaust bumps knocked down, 15psi intercooled on pump gas.

LOL! Yes, that's him :) I had a mental block from sniffing paint and couldn't recall his last name (or is that old age?).
Todd's pretty cool, and good friends with Paul Campbell (Old West Racing/East Texas board owners/mods). I need to get up there to see Paul, and that always involves a trip to Todd's...
His single out to work out pretty good...
Nay!

he had some exhaust leaks and some discharge leaks, but he got those sorted out and promptly lifted the heads at 17psi (on used stock head bolts! LOL!) he's studding it and we should see some track/dyno times soon... he says it'll roast the 28x10.5 slicks in 3rd from a roll! :D

I've never worked on an INCON car... only seen one up close and personal... I couldn't see the plugs and couldn't find a couple of the plug wires... I was under the impression that access was a little cramped...
sorry for any misinformation!

Hey Forrest, is this on an SN95? I could probably look back through your other threads, but I'm lazy :D.
Looks great though!

Hey, I'll donate my car as a beta test for the SN95 kit, when you get to it ;).

you gonna let me chop it in half and keep it in my garage? :D
hey guys, I just went out and checked the plug access... #1 and #4 are cake... 2 and 3 can be hand threaded from above and then use a plug socket and an open end wrench... really not a big deal at all! (it was easier than I'd anticipated!)

haha, no misinformation at all. I was using every bit of sarcasm when I wrote my first post ;) In all honesty, except for one plug, the rest are "relatively" acessible. Ill be honest though...I am NOT looking forward to plug changes.
Your kit looks good Forrest! Keep it up!

Oh, you are nominating my car for the official chop up? Man, that's just wrong.
I think your car is the better of the two for the job... I am just a wittle girl, what would I need with one of those anyway?!?! :p

Looking great Forrest! Have you come up with a pricing scheme yet for your kits?
Also, how did you get that tubing in a rectangular shape right before it goes into the turbo?

Ben,
I've got numbers in my head, but I'm probably just gonna wing it and go on a kit-by-kit basis...
I shaped the pipe the old fashioned way... BFH!! :D

Forrest,
HMMMMM..... I just have to say that this is the exact stage that I am currently at with my turbo project. Are your kits on a pay up front spoken for basis or making them and selling them?? I would just be interested in the downpipes and headers... Shoot me a pm and let me know how much were talking and some sort of time... This could potentially cut my work in half and help me get this bitch running A LOT faster..

Todd,
hey bro, good to hear from ya! I can't afford to take payment up front at this time... I have yet to actually complete ONE kit, so I'm not going to go writing checks I can't cash if you know what I mean...
I honestly think that once I get the other turbo jigged up that I ought to be able to spit these things out pretty quickly...
I gotta order some studs and nuts from Cummins for the turbo mounting flange and get some of these turbos cleaned up and rebuilt, but recently I've had a number of people who already have turbos hitting me up, and if we can settle on a price that'll make it worth my while, I'm sure we can do some business...
the problem is that it's one of those "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts" things... I stand to turn a decent profit on the turbos themselves and when everything's all packaged up and ready to install, it's easier to justify a higher price...
I realize I won't have much trouble selling the kits either way (with or without turbos), but I do want to make sure I cover my ass on the money I've spent on everything and rebuilding the turbos and such...
but I AM planning on selling kits both ways, I just need to get to the point where I have a COMPLETE kit and I can sit down and crunch the numbers and figure it all out... I'm sure you know that projections are always just that... and in the automotive performance arena, the projections always seem to turn out being a little low now matter how high you think you're projecting! :(
wow, sorry for the novela... just downed a pot of black coffee!
bottom line: I'm definately in this to make money, but I'm also wanting a little "clique glory" and am wanting to help my buds show up their local credit card racers! (and I'm gonna be on a pretty small scale here) so that's why at this point I don't know if I'll ever really have "published" prices on individual stuff and will probably just go on a case-by-case basis...
sure, I'll put a complete kit up on ebay every now and again, but believe it or not, I DO want to help out my buds... just gotta make sure I can put some food on the table too (jobless)

oh, and just as a "hint"
I realize a lot of people are interested in this stuff, but the longer it's been and the quicker I can spit them out, the more inclined to "deal" I'll be...
at this point, I've got a fair amount of time/money/work invested and all I ACTUALLY have to show for it is a little less than half of ONE kit and a bunch of materials... granted, I'm feeling confident at this point, but there's still that feeling in the back of my mind that "damn I've got a lot of money in this kit!"
but I assure you that once I sell a few complete kits and have actually turned a profit, it won't feel like such a big deal... it's kinda like porting heads... back when I did my first few pair of heads, it felt like an ordeal... now that I can spit them out in my sleep, it's not that bad (don't ask... I hate porting now! the welding and stuff is fun though!!!)
so once I'm in the black and my time/money/work-cost per unit is lower, it'll be a more prime time for you PoMoFo's to get your cheaper components...
that's not to say we can't start talkin' now, just blabbing while I'm buzzing on this caffeine! :D
