View Full Version : How big of disc brakes on 15" rim?

I run 15" Rodlites and wanted to upgrade to a larger front disc, this car used to be a 4 banger. What do I want to search for that will fit this rim and maintain 4 lug?

Rear disc might be of interest as well.

Thanks,
Bubba

Bubba,

Do you still have 10" brakes in the front of the car? If so, the 11" units on a V8 car would be an easy swap (you'll need V8 spindles too...). I don't think a 12" brake will clear (and worse yet, I don't think anybody makes a 4-lug big disc)...

Sorry, have to run in mid-thought...

Ok, I'm back...

If you add the Lincoln 73mm calipers, stainless 'sleeve' bushings and Performance Friction pads (either regulars or Z's), that would make a nice set-up (especially over your 10" units)...

Bubba,

I did a quick search on a few sites and most seem pretty expensive for 4 lug stuff. I looked at www.ssbrakes.com and www.baer.com .

On Baer's site they have templates you can print out to see if their systems will fit your wheels. Might be worth a shot. Here is a link to the Rod and Drag rear system. Not sure how much it us but they might be worth contacting, if anything for information.

This is also a very good site to look at. Matt has put a lot of effort into his findings and has helped a lot of people. Give it a shot.

Another idea for you, I was going to go this route till I could find some good 5 lug wheels, but I found some before I changed my rear end. On Matt’s webpage that Kyle mentioned – he shows the flipped Lincoln Mark VII rear disc brake setup. If you do this, but redrill the Mark VII rotors for the 4 lug bolt pattern, you can swap all the brake parts onto your stock rear end, stock 4 lug axles and all. I think the Mark VII rear setup looks great and works great also. Kyle saw mine when he came over. It ran me $125 for the complete rear, caliper to caliper from pick a part, $50 for new rotors, and I spent about $150 on other misc parts, ebrake cables, pads, new master cylinder (94 Mustang) and adj proportioning valve. I got 11” vented rear disc brakes for about $325, but it can run less if you find some good used rotors and skip the ebrake setup (like $220!!!). Let me know if you want more info.

Hey Thomas, good to see you over here.

Thomas has a good point. You might want to give that a shot. Cheap and effective. Thomas put his set-up together for pretty cheap. Not to mention the steal of a deal he got on his wheels.

Yeah Kyle, I’ve been registered here since a few weeks before they changed servers - mostly just looking. Saw the link in Shane’s signature on WSM and followed it. My wife actually got a kick out of the name when I told her about it.

I thought about it a little more on the way home last night. He could probably get the calipers, brackets, all the brake lines and the rotors from Pick a Part for about $80, since he would reuse his axles. Add the MC and PV for $35 and $47, and I forgot about Matt’s 3 to 2 port conversion needed to use the later model MC for $30. PV plug - $7 and pads $15 and other misc stuff – still around $225-250 plus your labor. A great deal I think, for what you get. Plus the Mark VIIs are really common at PAP - they had 8 at one time when I went there.

11" is the biggest that will fit.
