ok.... for those of you that dont already know.... ive been tryin ta figure out what tha hell is wrong with my nova fer about a month er 2 now. i swaped out tha carb with one off of a truck, i changed hei module, i checked the timing and a whole bunch of other stuff that im forgetting.
well yesterday i ran a compression check on the odd # cylinders. heres what i found :
#1 = 90psi
#3 = 105psi
#5 = 90psi
and #7........ = dead as all fuckin get out.
today im gonna run a check on tha even #'s, and see if i cant figure out if #7 is due to rockers bein too tight, a valve bein bent, er if theres a whole in tha piston.
thats all for now "kids".... tune in later for another heart breaking episode of "MY FUCKIN' CAR"
:hmm: :( :( :hmm:

Those numbers seem sorta low but of course I am comparing them to my car.
What type of Nova do you have? I have always liked Novas like the early 70's hatchbacks and the 66-68 chevy II.

You could do leakdown to determine the cause; a badly blown headgasket will act the same way...
Look at this as an opportunity to, ah, revamp a few things...
I think we've all been in your spot a time or two; it's a PITA, but you gotta pay if your going to play :D
Nay!

Hopefully it's something simple, like the headgasket.

ok... so i just got done doin tha even cylinders... and tha #2 is dead too.... here are tha findings :
#2 = dead as all hell
#4 = 90psi
#6 = 90psi
#8 = 90psi
im goin to assume that becouse i have 2 dead cylinders (one on each head) that it isnt a head gasket problem. i talked to shaggy earlier and told him the results... he seems pretty sure that its a case of bent valves.
i will pop tha heads off tomarro and actually get a peek at what tha hell is goin on.... hopefully i can have her patched up by next weekend (ccb).
if it is just a head gasket..... kewl beans. if its bent valves.... no biggy, cause i have a spare set of heads in tha garage. if its a hole in tha piston, still no real biggy as i have a spare short block in tha garage, but thats just a pain in my ass. i think that tha most that im really lookin at spendin no matter what tha situatuation is about $50.... but since i just said that, i wont be suprised if somethin else happens.
traceman - i like tha chevy II's and tha late 60's to early 70's (69-71 to be specific) too, but i just happened to pick up my nova fer free form my grand parents. its a 1977 four door. came stock with a 1bbl inline 6 and a th250. all that has since changed.... hehehe. if james (hangnail) will ever get his ass back in town ill see about postin some pics of it so yall can see it. i think hes due back tomarro.

Speaking of "apropos" (with the correct spelling ;)), when I first heard this word I was in Junior High and we were discussing Edgar Allen Poe. I thought the teacher had said "apt per Poe" haha. Well, I guess in that context that was pretty close after all.
/me now returns you to your regularly scheduled thread

ok... heres tha latest.....
i got tha heads off (finally.... had ta use a 4-way on tha end of a 1/2" ratchet ta get tha fuckers off). i looked at tha pistons and they look fine, although they have valve reliefs, so i dont know if that would hide any valve-hitting-piston marks (ill look at it better tomarro). i looked at tha head gaskets, and they look fine.
ive put oil in tha cumbustion chambers of the original heads, and so far (about 5 hours later) there has been no leakage. i did the same thing on tha replacement heads, and one of the chambers leaked out completely in 2 minutes or less. if it turns out that the original heads are good, then im am at a loss for words.
