I was talking to Fred about this a week or so back. I had always heard to route the rack and pinion connections into each other to basically make an open loop. Fred told me something different though. My goal is to have manual steering :D without doing the Flaming River crap.

First...what's the best way to do this. Assuming I'm running the stock belt configuration (AC and all) would I need a power steering delete kit or can I just remove it? The only problem I would see with that is the water pump...it wouldn't get the same amount of belt wrap if I simply omit the power steering with a shorter belt.

I ran the PoMoFo manual rack for quite a while on my 90. You just basically disconnect the line, and leave them open to atmosphere. Still more difficult than a true manual rack, but a hell of a lot cheaper! :D

You don't necessarily need to relocate the A/C compressor once you've removed the P/S. People have been running short belts that bypass the P/S pump for years. Just throw a shorter belt on it and disconnect the lines. Is it ghetto? You betcha! LOL

One thing to consider is that it's gonna be a BITCH to turn those big front tires. I ran my setup with Draglite skinnies and it was still a workout to do a dry turn....

We did the PoMoFo rack on the yellow car back when Larry owned it. Worked great and it was damn cheap!!

Currently, I have the 79 Fox manual rack. It's cheap from AutoZone, about $120.

I would suggest doing away with the factory rag joint also and adapting a Borgeson U-joint to the factory intermediate shaft. These can be had for about $65 from Scummit.

I figure it will be a bisch turning with the current Saleen wheels, but I'm working a deal to swap them for some Weld skinnies...so I figure that will work out ok.

When i ran a POMOFO rack on my 84 I looped the high side back to the low side so as to keep the rack full of fluid for lubrication..... never really felt much different then a manual maybe a little harder but not much.

Hey what's up all, new guy here! Just curious what is the pomofo manual rack? I still have power steering and I wanna ditch it. Thing leaks like crazy and I have no ambition to replace when I run skinnies all the time. Thanks.

Basically that's what I'm doing. Just removing my pump. I've heard to cap the lines, and to leave them open..so I'm up in the air on that issue. From what I gather on skinnies it works fine.

Remove the power steering pump? Then cap the lines? It won't lock up? Thanks.

If you drain all the fluid and leave the openings uncapped where the lines used to conect to the rack it will not lock up. I can't say what will happen if you loop the two lines together, I've never done that.
