Okay local FE guys (and you know who you are), an aquantence of mine pulled up in my yard yesterday in this:
<center>http://users3.ev1.net/~rickbook/pmofo/RogerSanchez71Mach1.jpg</center>

It is 'believed' to be a genuine, numbers-matching '71 Mach 1 - (haven't confirmed it yet - will do VIN search) with the 351 Cleveland (location of w.p. and valve covers clues). The front clip (among other things - wheels?) has been changed. All in all, it's a great start for a nice street car.

He was told by the previous owner that the engine needed a valve job. I advised him to get a second opinion from someone 'in-the-know'. If it truly is an original 351C, then get an FE guy to look at it and have them perform the job (rather than some local yahoo who doesn't understand what he's working on).

So, local FE guys (and you know who you are), I told him I knew a hand that could hep him out - at a cost of course.

He's leaving for Arizona at the end of next week for a month, so the car will be available for at least that long to be worked on.

PM me if interested in making a little extra $.

BTW, this 18/yo kid goes to UTI full-time, works a full-time job as a night-time grocery store stock-boy, takes care of his mom, and worked extra hours for 3 months to save enough to pay cash for this car ($3,500). Gotta admire his fortitude. Wish all 18y/o's were that way.

He was in agreement that he may have to work more o/t at his job to pay the extra to have good work done. He said he'd park it and save up the money rather than have someone cheapy "F" it up.

Chris: Please don't confuse the issue with facts! :)

(btw: I knew I'd get a bite from you. I was 'kinda' counting on it. :)

I'm not surprised about it 'maybe' not being a Mach1 - still wating on VIN info from him though. I'll have to take a closer look at it also. It does have front disc brakes, the fold-down rear seat (which access the trunk area), 9" rear, and automatic. Don't remember tach, flip-up gas cap, etc.

Re: "However, I don't know why you insist on an FE guy working on a Cleveland family engine..."

If it were "MY" car, I'd want someone who knew the in's and out's of these engines by heart (compared to someone who only knows 4.6's or 5.0's or cheby's). I'd just hate to see him take it to "Jose's Garage and Wrecking Co." and have them screw the engine up.

More info to come as I recieve it.

Ill,

As soon as he contacts me, I'll ask him to give you a shout (pm me your phone number) about UTI. In the meantime, you might check out http://www.uticorp.com (if you haven't already). Their contact is info@uticorp.com.

Here is the big Q what heads does he have the 4-v or the 2-v????If he has the 4-V heads and want to help he low speed torque production I have a set of 2-v heads with the 4-v valves in them...That way he gets he large valves but the smaller ports twhich helps promote low speed velocity bettter than the 4-v heads....That being said if chris isn't intrested let me know I cut my teeth on clevlands didn't go windsor till the fox body made them so much cheaper to work on. I have always liked the clevlands better but I am a PoMoFo so i race run the cheaper motor heck I even have a semi complete one sitting around (AKA basket case it is all there just in baskets)

If it's a real Mach 1 third and fourth digits of the VIN code are 05. For a 2-V 351 Vin code is fifth digit is H. 4-V VIN code is M. If it is Q it is a ram air 4-V. IF you have 4-V heads you need to put in plates to effectively shrink the intake ports as they are too big.

In terms of your valve job. Put a vacuum gauge on it while its running and see if you get a steady reading. If it jumps around rythmically do a compression check. All cylinders should be withing 5-10% of each other. If you have a low one squirt in a little (< 1 teaspoon) of oil), crank over motor to distribute and check that cylinder again. If it picks up, you have bad rings. Any good machine shop can to a valve job for $100-$150 if you bring them the heads. Westside is a good one and there are many others.

As for me working on the car 1)It's too new :p and 2)I have too many of my own projects (four cars in my sig are serious projects in process  ). A good place to take it to would be KR Mustang in Sugarland. The owner is Kevin Casey and he is a really good guy (my wagons are stored there). The other place would be Ford Specialties on Upland off I-10 and talk to James Lanford.

The current President of MCOH, Greg White, has a 71 Mach 1 project car and Red Door Racing has a 71 Mach 1 SCJ car and is very knowledgable about these cars.

Hope this helps
BTW FE is the engine family for 331, 332, 352, 390, 391, 406, 410, 427, and 428.
