As some of you may already know, I'm looking to get out of the Air Force and get a "real job" by the end of the year. :D I need to get started on my resume`, yet I am kind of lost on where to begin.
I've got a book on writing effective resumes ("Princeton Review - Trashproof Resumes"), but would like to see some examples of resumes as well as cover letters.
The only other jobs I've had were during high school/college and didn't even require a resume, so I really am starting from scratch. LOL
Any tips/suggestions, etc?
Thanks in advance guys!

I usually just open the resume' template in MS Word and embellish like hell (Okay, so I wasn't 'solely' responsible for inventing the offshore drilling rig).
'Just remembered - I'm unemployed. Never mind. http://users3.ev1.net/~rickbook/smilees/guntoheadsmilee.gif

Actually I need to update mine. The CEO was just quoted as saying that nobody in the company will get salary increases until the company is profitable again and that doesn't look like it'll happen in 2003, 2004, or 2005. We've already gone 1 year without raises. There's no way in HELL I'm waiting until 2006 for one.

Damn Nay,
Hearing things like that makes me wish I had a solid idea for being self-employed.

This is definitely one of the things that is kind of frightening about leaving the military. As long as I don't do anything real stupid, I've got a job for 20+ years. It doesn't pay worth a shit and they whore you out every chance they get, but it's a guaranteed paycheck. Obviously, in the civilian world, the jobs are not guaranteed......
It's gonna be a hell of a change! :)

The job market it just plain ol shitty right now. Hell the dow is flirting with dipping below 9,000. Only time in recent years it has dipped lower was right after 9-11. Some of my buddies that just graduated in May are waiting tables because NO ONE is hiring. Considering all that, I feel damn lucky where I am right now (even though I am not totally in love with what I am doing).
But to answer your question, :D ill send you my resume when I get home tonight (ties a ribbon around the index finger)

Thanks Trevor....
I'm in the medical field (Medical Equipment/Radiology Equipment Service and Repair) and we seem to be fairly immune to the economy. It seems as though there are plenty of positions available, but I guess we'll see how true that is once Sep/Oct gets here.
I'm definitely not going in over-confident and if I must, I can stay in the AF.....

illfated, you got a message :)
I need someone to come look at my house as It's pretty pest infested!
Darrell, would you be willing to relocate to Houston? I work at a hospital and can see if we are hiring for something like what you do. Do you repair only or can you be like a Radiologist operator type too? Ifyou want to email me: rusman@rusman.com.
I can't be of much help with the resume except for suggesting that you keep it to one page if at all possible. This is coming from many people that I know that read resumes. Sometimes it's hard to do so, but usually it's a must. I have known people that will throw out all the 2+ page resumes just to help narrow the stack down!

Rusman, my new hero! Sorry Darrell, you have to move over. :p
Rus, what hospital? I have been looking into achieving an associates that will lead me to registered nurse certification. I am currently in the IT industry and it's gotten rather drab. I muddle around with networking and some unix stuff. If nursing sucks, I can always use the fact I have a medical certification in conjuncture with my IT experience to find a technical in the medical field.
Any opinions? Thoughts? Warnings? :D
I am really hyped about my desicion. I just don't know anyone besides Darrell in the field and he's not a civilian so it's quite different.

Rus if you as long as you are asking about what is open at your hospital my Brother is the San Francisco VA head RT he is thinking of moving back to houston (if his wife will let him...long story there) but he wouldn't mind knowing what the opportunitys might be here. Thanks

Shaggy: RT? What's that stand for?
Shaggy, Christina: Well, I know we are hiring for nurse positions and quite a few others. I work at Texas Children's Hospital (www.texaschildrenshospital.org). You can try to look around on the website for positions if you want. I know that they have a program where if someone gets hired and I'm used as a referral, I get some money. The cash starts at $500 and goes up to $5000!!! depending on how 'hot' the job is. If anyone uses my name, I'll split it :D!
Christina: I am a server administrator at the hospital so I know what you mean. With a nursing degree, you could work as an "Application Support" person at TCH. Really, "Application Support" is mostly just a project co-ordinator type of person and doesn't do anything technical..just project plans, organization, etc. There's quite a few nurses who now work in our IS department. It's quite helpful because they know how it really is on the other side.
Warnings? Well, if you dont' like blood, it's probably not a wise choice :p.
Thoughts? If it makes you happy, then it doesn't matter. It's scary to change into a new job, much less a new career. I myself wish I had another skill, just for a failsafe, but I don't. I'm sure I could do other things, I just don't have anything as well built up as my l33t IT skillz.
I'll check with some other people at work and see what they say about the IT going nurse thing. Usually, it's the other way around (nurse going IT), from what I've seen. Not knocking it, it's just my (limited) experience in my 3 years there.

Hey Rusty!
I currently work in an Air Force Medical Equipment Repair Center. It's a regional shop and we basically take care of the major medical systems at bases in North TX, Oklahoma, Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico. I prefer servicing x-ray/ultrasound/mammography, but I am certified as a "biomedical equipment technician"..which means if it plus into the wall in a hospital....I can apparantly fix it...LOL If you wouldn't mind asking, I would sure appreciate it. My first "choice" is going to be to work field service for an OEM, but working in-house at a specialty clinic could be interesting as well. But, working as a general biomed at a plain-jane hospital has gotten pretty old.
Anyway....if you happen to see something, please let me know! The AF isn't going to release me until 1 Nov, so I have a while, but I'm trying to get things put together now....and get my resume out there.
Thanks to everyone who has shared their resume with me...much appreciated!

I get dropped as your hero and then you want my opinion?...:)
I'm having a hard time envisioning how you could intermingle a Nursing degree into an extensive IT background. The equipment they use just isn't that complicated. If you can set up a home network....you pretty much have a central monitoring system down pat.
Now....if you want to intermingle the two.... it's called Teleradiology or DR (Digital Radiography). As opposed to using conventional film to capture an x-ray image, they use cassettes that can be erased and re-used. To get your image off the cassette, you insert it into a "Plate Reader" and it produces a digital image on a monitor. From there, the possibilities are endless. Hospitals have systems set up where a doc on the 10th floor reviews an exam that was JUST performed on the 1st floor. Or a doc reviews an exam of one of his patients he referred to a speciality clinic 200 miles away......you get the picture.
These systems are almost entirely Unix-based and, while relative simple networking-wise, it takes someone who knows the medical side of it, too. As far as the service and administration goes, you seem to see more "computer people who know a little about medical shit" than visa-versa.
So...go become a Rad Tech, learn a good modality (CT, MRI, Sonographer) and either stick with it....or integrate the IT stuff...

Thanks for the input Rus, Darrell!
I don't want to be in IT ... at least not in the capacity that I am in now. I'd like to persue a nursing career... if it sucks, then what you speak of sounds like a kick ass option, Darrell!
Plus, I haven't found any other way to get my foot in the door when it comes to the medical field, even with a background in IT. I've bombed MD Anderson with resumes... no results. And this is over the course of a year! Granted, I am up against hundreds of unemployed.
It sounds like venturing into the medical field will open more possibilites for me. I am at a dead end currently. I am also itchin' for something more challenging... something different. Etc!
Cool beans, at least I know who to bug when I need advice! :D
