while im not able to drive the nova (safely anyways), i do remember wondering what the deal was with the tranny. it will suit my purpose for the time being i guess (when i get it runnin), but i wouldnt mind knowing what the deal is so i can get it fixed/replaced later on down tha road.

when it shifts at high rpm's it kind of falls into gear....
and when it is in drive, it shifts into third from second waaaay to early.

what do yall think? rebuild? shift kit? throw some thoughts at me. :)

Me no know trannies.

It's gonna cost $800.00 no matter what it is if you take it somewhere. That seems to be the majical number for repairing trannies AND a/c's.

Someone (who knows trannies) on here has GOT to have an idea!

well.... i know of a place on tha south side (er is it tha north side?) that'll rebuild my tranny fer $300-$350. thats brand new everything... even converter.... but if it can be fixed with just a shift kit that i already have, that cost me $20, i would much rather do that.....:)

In my limited knowledge of 350's, a shift kit won't fix your problem. You could try changing the filter and fluid. That might help you out. It also could be your vacuum solenoid acting up. Of course you could need a rebuild. $300 or so for parts/labor (including convertor) is pretty fair, as long as that place does good work.

Ok, now that I've had some time to devote, here are my thoughts (FWIW)...

The early shifting could be caused by the governer, but more than likely the modulator. If you're lucky enough to have an adjustable mod, remove the vaccuum line to it, and with a small screwdriver turn the screw in (CW) to raise shift points. Please check all of your vacuum lines first, to eliminate that possibility...

Is the fluid level right? If any fluid is in the modulator line, replace it, and check the level...

The slide into third gear may be caused from the direct clutch pack being worn, or a leaking seal. Does the fluid smell burned, and dark red/brown? They all have a smell to them, but not too strong (unless damaged)...

$300 for the rebuild doesn't sound bad, IMHO. I've done a couple of TH350's and they aren't too bad. If it were me, I get a Transtar kit for $67.99, and a Transgo shift kit for $14.99 (a durabilty enhancing kit really), OR get a performance rebuild kit for $109.99. Add a B&M shift kit if you want...

If you decide you need/want a rebuild, and the $300 isn't palatable, pick up the book by Ron Sessions entitled "Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 Handbook" from Barnes and Noble (or others), and take a read. It's a step by step book that will lead you through it. Expect to take 10-12 hours for the first one (you'll get quicker!).

Hope some of this helps...

Chris
