I have a buddy with a Chicago Electric powder-coating set up (he's actually going to powder coat his entire car with this thing - white!!!).
He's PC'd a lot of parts for me (satin black) but I'm going to hit him up to coat my headers (ceramic?).
He's a http://www.columbiacoatings.com fan, but I couldn't find a powder especially for headers opn their site.
Anyone have any experience in this or have any suggestions as to which brand/type coating to use?
Thanks,
Rick

sorry I don't have info on your header coatings, but I'd like to ask if you know more about the coating process and how it works? Is this something I could buy (cheaply) to coat parts?

Got me interested enough to look up the price of one of those systems. Not too bad. Is this like the one he has Rick. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=42802
How is your buddy going to heat up the entire car enough to coat it? I was thinking the engine compartment would be pretty durable with that stuff on it.

That'd be the one.
Re: how to heat up car
He purchased the butane heat lamps which heat the surface(s) and he checks the temp with a laser type thingamajiggy.
I'm second in line if turns out nice. :D
Re: Engine compartment
your right about that - but if this things works on his exterior of his ride - and looks nice - hmm.....??
The reason he's PC'ing the exterior of his Maverick is because the last time he had it painted, somebody keyed his car the next week. The powder coating will help minimize the damage (and it's easy to reapply).

Well I would like to see a car done with powder coating using a heat lamp. I hope it turns out nice. I hear that they do this on some cars in Europe.
Is this guy local? (Northside)

Rick,
Keep us posted on the progress and supplies for this.. I have been toying with the idea of getting a PC for sometime, but never could find the room for a big enough oven... I'm also in the process of stripping my engine bay and that would sweet to be able to do it.. Let us know some costs as far as the PC materials are concern... $99.00 for the system itself is pretty cool, but if it's going to cost $1k in materials, I think I'll stick with the paint and take my chances.. :)

PS: www.hotcoat.com is one of the sites I have been doing some looking into..

They talk about using the infared light on that site also. Sounds like you really have to stay on top of things to make it work right. Also the maverick will probably have to be totally disassembled or the plastic and rubber stuff will get messed up. You would probably have to take out every grommet and wire in your engine compartment to keep from destroying it.
Well sounds neat anyway. Guess I will have to stick to small parts.

Yes, one DOES have to keep an eye on it closely. And, yes, the car will have to be TOTALLY stripped (for the reasons you mentioned).
BTW, the actual cost of the powder itself is very 'inexpensive' compared to paint.
see http://www.columbiacoatings.com/1024t45676ty78yj789345erfrg5467.htm for pricing of powder. A little goes a long way (I'm guessing less than $50 for the cost of the powder itself, however, the intial cost of the lamps, sheilds, etc may be a little high).
I'll get in touch with the guy and see how he's coming along.

Well, I just remembered that I owed somebody some information...
You guys all know Eric Vigil (SilverStang). He owns/runs a PC company. See http://www.raceproven.net/...You can contact him at (281) 455-9509...
Also, David Booth (my Corporate Lawyer-type buddy!), gave me the lead to Quality Product Finishing, Inc. David relayed to me this guy is good and fairly reasonable. Contact:

I don't know if it does you any good, but that's all I know right now...
[Added note: If you guys are interesetd in getting things coated, let's try and work some sort of bulk deal, depending on colors. I have several aluminum intakes that I would like cleared, and chassis-black is always popular...]
