Since we all are fairly spread out, and keeping track of events and happenings outside of your area is difficult, it might be nice if when you hear of an event in your area that you go to the 'Calendar' button on the upper right, and fill out the appropriate info regarding the event:

Name of event
Location (City, State)
Time
Contact
Contact phone number
anything else!

My wife travels a far amount, in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Missippi, and Arkansas, and if there are events that I find interesting, I can and will travel with her to attend some things...

I've been trying to get people interested in the Hallsville track in Longview. The hot rodding/street rodding scene in the Tyler/Longview area is quite good, and it might be a good central location for all to meet, if an event allows it...

Thoughts, concerns, ridicule?

I agree, but I wonder how many people actually look at that calender. Hell, honestly this is the first time I have looked at it myself LOL.

There's a TON of events going too!

Between the Clash of the Titans race series and the Lonestar Raceway Texas Road Warrior races I just wish I had more time and money to go and race.

As was my first look...

I think if we let people know about it, the 'usefulness' and frequency of checking will increase...

We could add local events and (even though I hate the term) 'tech days' for locals to participate in, if need be...

I know for sure that I intend to holds a couple of tech days )housepainting 101, Suburban demolition 4503, Crap Stacking 6013, just to name a few...)

I have a number of 'projects' in the works, and will try and fill out the calendar for all to see, as I may need help documenting the work (for tech articles)...

Eh?

Nay!

I think Shane needs to sign up for your Crap Stacking class. :D

What I want to know is when is the Craw Shucked Advanced class going to be held? Or Beer Chugging/Belching for Intermediates?

LOL you guys are funny!

To add to Nay's great suggestion, since not everyone knows about the calendar, it could easily be linked in a post here in Local Happenings. Here's (http://pomoforacing.com/forums/calendar.php?action=getinfo&eventid=13) an example.

See? Easy. Now we can post the event, get use out of the calendar and leave an opportunity for everyone to post replies or questions/updates about the event.

There is also a link on the front page that points to the "Upcoming events." I am thinking that this need to point to the calendar and not to the forum...give your opinions and I'll talk to fred about it when he returns..

hmm, Todd, not sure. I hate to distract from the 'Upcoming events', as it's more of a discussion forum, whereas the calendar is just an indicator...

IMHO, I wouldn't change the linkie; we'll all get used to looking at the calendar, and if not, then tough :D! No, I think we'll get the hang of it, as long as it's used for something more than just birthdays...(damn it! /me erases my birthday 'event'!)

One thing that might help others know is when somebody is traveling (unless you plan to steal my stuff), so that 'deliveries' could be made. Second thought: bad idea; scratch that (TMI is a bad thing...).

I saw Pete mentioned something about Mid-America Shelby meet this year? When is that? (for those that don't know, it's a car show one day, open track event at Hallett, and a day at the strip; nice event!)

I just saw this thread, as it was posted while I was gone on my honeymoon. When I read the forums, I usually use the "find posts from past 24 hours" or the "find posts from the past 3 days". I chose the latter option when I returned from my honeymoon, so this post must've JUST been off the list.

I like the calendar idea, and I myself have had to start getting into the habit of checking it. Chris has done a GREAT job in posting things, and I think some more of us need to contribute to it (when we can. Not like we need to MAKE shit up just so we can post on the calendar, lol).

As far as the link on the front page.... What about a link to the calendar from there? I dont see why we cant have upcoming events along with a calendar link. Input?

Hrm, this idea would take some programming/scripting work that I don't know how to do, but how about having a little "Upcoming Events" table on the front page...kinda like a sidebar thingy. I envision the script pulling the latest 5-10 events and putting them in this 'sidebar thingy', and it would purge or update each time the page is refreshed (i'm thinking js or perl could handle this easily). Finally, each event could be hyperlinked to the details page for the event.

Howzat sound?

That sounds like it could be neat, and what would the "database" for links be? The calendar events?

Too bad I dont know that kinda stuff, or know anyone who does.

I've been wanting to do something with our logo at the top for some time. Have a few "catchphrases" in a "bank" and each time the page is loaded, a diff catchphrase is under the logo. Mike said he was gonna do that, months ago, and never got around to it, so Im still stuck waiting to learn the code or find someone who can do it.

Fred, the way I see it, is that the database is the calendar. The code would be written to look at the calendar part of the forum software and everything should be there, links, text, everything.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if someone had already made something like this for vBulletin. I'll check and see if I can find something.

As for the catchphrase, I do know that there is something like that already. I've seen it come up on the bottom of forum pages, but it can't be too hard to put it somewhere else. I'll look for that too.

Fred, sorry, I forgot to look yesterday :). I'll (try) to remember tonight.

Damn, forgot where this thread was LOL.

Ok, Fred, after a little searching, I found this hack (http://www.vbulletin.org/hacks/index.php?s=&action=showhack&hackid=346) for the random quote changer.

You will have to register for that page, I think. Also, in the support thread for that hack is mention of a couple of other hacks that do the same thing. Those might end up being better, who knows.

I'm still looking for something for the calendar.

Ok, here (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21232&highlight=calendar) is a event hack, but it only pulls the current day event and place it on the front forum page.

I also found this one (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29500&highlight=calendar) that looks a little closer to what I had in mind.

Ohhh, there is a link at the bottom of this thread (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26525&highlight=calendar) that really sounds just like what I was thinking of! However, I can't get to it. It seems they want a customer name and number  that I guess you have since you own this software.

That's all I could find. That will probably give us something. :)
