FE (or anyone in the know),

I have a 1965 Mercury Monterey at my Mom's place (about 300 mi away) similar to the one shown below.

It has a 390 in it also (valve covers never removed). I was wondering about the potential of this engine. I don' t think they came with a lot of horsepower (less than 200) and wouldn't know if there are kits readily available to increase the power to 1 hp (or more) per c.i.d.

I don't hear a lot about anyone running these competitivley. Are these not good blocks to bore and stroke?

Also, from what I was told, "FE" stands for "Ford Edsel" and was the beginning of the larger displacement engines (starting with the Edsel). Do you agree with this?

I'd be interested in any other info you have on the 390.

Thanks,

Nobody seems to agree on what FE stands for I've heard Ford Engine and Ford Engineering I personally believe Ford meant it to be Ford Edsel as they started in the Esdels and Fords of the late 50's. Right now it stands for F*****g expensive as the 428/427 parts (same basic engine) are being priced out of sight. In terms of boring I'd be leery about going more than 0.030 over. Stroking is limited to putting in a 428 crank and making a 410. For their displacement these blocks are light and STOUT. An aluminum headed intaked 390 weighs less than a iron headed 302. Cross bolt caps debuted on the 427 FE. Matter of fact in the 60's they made a SOHC FE available over the counter making >600 hp stock.

It would be real easy to come up with 1 hp/ci with a 390. The wagon on my avatar dynoed at 375 hp with a 428. That's with pump gas thru a c-6 and mufflers. The wagon had run 12's on radial street tires (yoko's) at 4400#'s. Aftermarket parts are scarce compared to 460/windors but like any other motor, 1 hp/cid is but an intake, cam and headers away. These were Ford's race motors in the 60's. A 427 Fairlane was the first NHRA stocker to run under 10 seconds just a few months ago.

My guess is your moms marauder is and H-code if 2-bbl @ 265 hp or Z code if 390 @ 315 hp. Hunt me down at the CCB if you want to hear more. I run turdasaur at the CCB.
