I am just curious as to what is the most important part of a motor that determines its power band? I know that all 3 (heads, intake, and cam) are factors, but which is the most critical? What I am more concerned with is the upper part of the power band.

/me needs the advise of a wise man to educate him.

I would vote "cam"

I say cam has most to do with what rpm you make your power at but the heads have the most to do with how much power you will make. But if the cam is to small for the heads it won't make power worth shit and vise versa if the heads are to small for the cam same thing.

So your saying my cam is to small for my heads and intake huh...LOL j/k

Shane,m

get me you heads, intake and cam specs and I will run them by Earl and see what recommends. He is the guy that did mine.

What about runner length in the intake?

runners do make a big difference on the torque curve

Cam! You're heads are too big for a lil ol 302, you want to trade them to me in exchange for my box stock trick flows. I'll trade you heads and $100 so you can put new gaskets on with the stockers. Whatdya say???

OK, my heads, $100 for your gaskets, and I'll do the install for you. Thats worth the other $400!

The day I have someone swap heads for me on MY car for $400 is the day I sell my car.

Your power band is, for the most part, determined by the weakest link.

If you put Vic Jr heads and a Spyder on a car with a stock cam, your limiting factor is definitely the cam.

If you put the same Vic Jr heads, the TFS 3# cam and a stock intake on a car, it's obviously the intake that's holding you back from spinning it to 7K rpm..

It's really the combonation of the three that determine it.....and here's a theoretical question: Here's some cam specs.....where is this thing gonna make peak HP?

276/277 advertised duration
213/220 @ .050
.525" lift
110 LSA

I am guessing around 5800rpm. My 2031 is supposed to hit peak around 5500 but it's 112LSA. With the narrower LSA, I am guessing your cam would buy another 300 rpm before peak hits. The stats on the 2031 are:

276/282 advertised
214/220 @ .050
.513"/.529" Lift
112 LSA on a 107 Int CL

Close....

That was actually the cam I had in my 90. Looks pretty damn small (it's actually my stock cam re-ground), but combined with some mildly ported Windsor Jr irons (260 cfm on the intake/ 189cc port) it peaked at just a hair over 6100rpm on the dyno. I'm sure if I had that same cam with unported E7s, it would have peaked more along the lines of 5500ish....
