Well after a few trials and tribulations, I've finally got the JYTT set up going again. Though at first, even after rebuilding the botttom end and double checking everything, I still had no boost. Perplexed, I decided to touch a few things that had needed a bit more attention like the turbo on the driver side that leaked oil, no matter how you routed the drain line (I'm using 5/8"). I even swapped in a different cartridge, which still smoked and leaked oil. So I was pretty confident in the fact it must of been my drain (WRONG, more on this in a bit) The passenger side turbo never leaked or smoked ever.It also has a Garret Reman. tag on it, so I figured, I had nothing to lose by switching it to the driverside and to just put a another cartridge in the passenger side turbo, to make sure it was the drain that was causing the oil problem. So to make a long diatribe a bit shorter, The car literally RIPPED and blew just about every hose connection loose! I had boost again! Not to mention a ton of oil all over the place from oil being blown out of the driver side intercooler that had accumalted from the bad cartridges.
I'm now convinced that most of the Dodge vehicles in JY's probably have good motors and bad turbos. I say this because, I have a total of 6 Dodge units, and four were bad. Good thing I only paid $20 a piece for them. I can also tell you that a little play in the shaft is too much, at least from what I'm seeing with my cartridges. The wheel on one is damaged, but the rest are pretty nice, though the seals and bearing are shot. I plan to have two of the cartridges rebuilt and balanced just to have a fresh pair from which to work with (not until the present units start to smoke though).
The Mass Air is an issue also. I have a Pro-M and if I try to use it with the 30# calibration that they sent it with, my car won't even idle. I tried turning it and it still would not work. I stuck my 19# unit on the housing and the car idles a bit better and made it driveable (as long as you were willing to be into boost during your whole trip!!!)but rich as hell anywhere below 2500 RPM. I had a 14# I took from a Tempo and decided to try it for shits and giggles. I put it in the car started right up and the idle shot up to like 1500 (Weird the 14# worked better then the 19#). I flipped the switch on my Air Adjuster! thingy to adjust and turned the voltage back a good bit until it idled right around 950-1000 and took it for a trip down to the local street race area Holmes Road (it's literally a block from where I keep my cars). It's still rich down low, but it accelerates and pulls pretty strong up to about 4900 and some change. I'm pretty sure it's blowing out the spark at that point as it'll hold right there and go no higher excpet in first where it'll reach close to 5700. I'm running a Crane Hi-6 and a PS91 coil, with plugs gapped at .032 and 10 degrees base timing. I'm seeing 6# of boost at the manifold with the wastegates untouched. I'm going to fab up a boost controller and lower the gap on the plugs to .025 this afternoon.
I also took a good friend of mine out late last nite for a ride. We pulled over after a few runs at full throttle (He has the SS with the 200 shot on my site). He was literally babbling at how hard the car pulls. We popped the hood and the headers were literally glowing orange! I had only saw that in a few turbo ads for ricers. Guess I now know why they suggest stainless for turbo headers. I guess if these give up the ghost, I may have soem fabbed out of stainless again.
Before I close, anyone got any ideas for the PCV? Mine is blowing out everytime I go into boost. I was contemplating running it into the air inlet of one of the turbos. Though I'm not to sure how this would work. Anyone tried it and what was the result?
