View Full Version : Puzzling Evidence

Okay, my 'Check Engine" light is still lighting up on the T'Bird.

The last 2-3 times I cleared the codes, they came back as reading (basically) "Left and Right Banks Rich". They didn't come on immediatley though.

I changed the plugs and wires. That seemed to help as the light didnt' come on for about a month. The car ran very smooth. I tested the theory by trying to make it come bck on (by going WFO) but it never came on.

That was a month ago. It's baaaa-ack. At the time it came on, I was idleing at a red-light.

Also, (here comes the puzzling evidence) when the car is shifting from 1-2, 2-3, 3-OD, there is a momentary 'shudder" (for lack of a better word). It seems to be coming from the tranny. It feels like a bad miss, but I'm thinking it's internal in the tranny as it only happens during shifts. BTW, it doesn't shudder under hard acceleration - only during 'granny' driving (shifting out at below 1800 r's).

Before I take it "JOE'S TRANNY, TOWING, WHORE AND GRILL", I'd like to hear some of you guys suggestions on how to trouble-shoot this bitch (I already know how to plain "shoot" it - and am getting ready to)?

Tranny fluid level is okay.
Plug wires re-inspected and 'look' okay.
I've reset the computer (removing a battery terminal).
I ran injector cleaner through it a few tanks back.
I'm running 93 octane (tried all major brands - no dif).

Me fears it's time for the tranny to be opened up and find the root of the problem.

If the car is still running this way at the next CCB, I prolly won't run it ("ruin it?").

Any help would be MUCH appreciated.

Thanks,

Rick

I think your first task is to determine what is causing the rich codes. Have you considered changing the O2 sensors?

Yeah, I considered that....and probably will go ahead and bite the bullet and try it but...I'm not convinced that's it (as they are sending info to the computer - ("RICH") when there probably IS/WAS a miss).

Thanks,
