One of my favorite movies as a kid is now coming back. Click on movie for preview because the link keeps taking it to the video game preview.

I hate to double post on myself, but I figured I'd share this with you guys after geeking out on the Internet about Tron for the past hour and a half.

So Disney is coming out with Tron Legacy this December and they've done an incredible job of viral advertising for it. First off they skinned the monorail's at the Disney Parks with "Tron" theme's...then they moved to Twitter, then Facebook, and a couple of web sites (www.flynnlives.com, www.helloflynn.com, operationtron.com, etc). FYI, Kevin Flynn is the main character in the movie Tron played by Jeff Bridges.

So they've put all of this up online including one of Flynn's game from the original movie called Space Paranoids, www.spaceparanoidsonline.com. In the game there are hidden rooms with bar codes on the wall. 15 levels, 15 bar codes, all in hidden rooms of the game. It's like a virtual puzzle geocache. You collect all 15, decode them, and then plug them into a virtual terminal on www.helloflynn.com and in the end you come up with concept art of the movie that then links to your Facebook account. I deleted most of the entries on my FB page as somebody posted on it thinking that I really got hacked. There's still a couple up there if you want to see. It's pretty creative if you ask me. You hack an online game, but to even play it you have to link your FB account. It then "hacks" entries onto your FB wall page. Slick advertising right there and I'm sure it was much cheaper than buying commercial TV time to run movie trailers.

The grand finale is something I'm a bit late for. Apparently back in April if you were one of the first few hackers to get through what I just did, you would find these posters like this http://www.flynnlives.com/operationtron/

The event was a fake press conference that is portraying events to setup the movie. Here's some coverage of what actually happened at the S.F. press conference back in April http://www.atomicpopcorn.net/encom-press-conference-in-san-francisco-disrupted-by-helicopter/

Another amazing feat is that Disney put on a event at a conference (Comic-Con 2009 and Comic-Con 2010, both in San Diego) that would take you on a scavenger hunt (again more hacking) that led you to Flynn's Arcade from the original movie Tron and tied into the upcoming Tron Legacy. In the arcade they had a hidden back room behind a Tron arcade game where there was an actual life size Light Cycle from the movie. They did it again this year but updated Flynn's Arcade from the 1980's theme, that they did in 2009 for the original Tron movie, to the current 2010 theme for the new Tron Legacy movie. It's even open this weekend if you're lucky enough to score tickets to get in according to their FB and Twitter page.

Pics and video from the San Diego event.

This has to be the most creative way to advertise for a movie I've ever seen!

Anyway, there's still more hacking. I'm currently working on wtf this is for: http://www.flynnlives.com/derez/
