A guy at work offered to sell me his Diablosport Chipfor $200. He said it's completely plug and play and will give approximately 75 horsepower to the rear. I've never messed with anything involving the car's computer so I'm weary to start tampering with that if it could be detrimental to the car. 75 HP sounds lovely but not if later down the road if it starts throwing codes or whatnot. I'm just looking for you guys' opinions. Let me know...

Need more info like what car you have, what car does he have, what mods do either car have, etc etc.
Btw, welcome to the site.

Unless it's a chip made for the same model EEC you have in your car, and you have the exact same mods, making a claim like "plug it in and get 75hp", when it wasn't even tuned specifically for your car, is outright ignorance.

75HP is a lot for something that's 'plug and play'. His car is a fox body LX pushing close to 500HP he says. My car is a 90 GT with no tuning mods whatsoever. I'm not going to buy it. I just wondered what you guys had to say about the idea.

yea 75 HP is entry level "blower numbers".. not "chip" numbers.
especially on an EEC 4 fox body.
most chip results are in the 10-18 HP gain range, just barely within the "butt-0-meters" range.

How much a chip helps all depends on the mods on the car and on the tuner.
A stock car will see maybe 5-10hp. A heavily-modified blower car could see 75hp if the tune without the chip was super whack. With chips/tunes, one size definitely does NOT fit all.

Thanks guys. I'll gladly spend my $200 elsewhere. At this point I'd take a new tint job over anything! It gets hot with all that hatchback space to cool off.

If you are looking for a little extra hp you could always advance the timing a couple of degrees if you have not already done so. It's a free mod. The only down side is you may have to run premium fuel to avoid detonation.

+1 or even verify the timing has been bumped up from "pre-delivery" mode which is set at ZERO.
friend of mine, has a 93 bone stock 100% virgin car...original owner.
he asked me how to "wake it up a bit"..
told him "bump the timing to 12"..
(it should have been bumped to 10 during pre-delivery.)
his car was still set at ZERO with the spout disconnected...

You'll notice a difference with the chip and it's a good bang-for-the buck mod. You'd probably feel more with a gear change than anything else. I think that would run about $400 with the parts installed.

Along with exhaust installs, I install gears as well. :) Just did one this past Friday.
