Well after getting the run around from several shops (I'm not mentioning names) so through a good friend I have made an apointment to take the car to David Cook the carb guru on Friday morning. My plan is to hopefully have the car dialed in and ready to run Friday night at either Baytown or HMP and try to get part if not all of my liscense passes in so that I can get everything off in the mail before the Pinks All Out event in Ennis on the 21st so I will be legal to run.
Man this application is confussing....esp the fees, do you just classify yourself as a Top sportsman racer? Am I looking at it right where it says that I have to get the liscense and comp number for $50.00 and then join the NHRA for $128... the total would be $178? WOW just for a liscence and I don't plan to run in a NHRA sanctioned event!
Is anyone planning on being at the track this Friday or Sunday that can help me and sign off on my card providing everything goes well with the tuning of the car on Friday? Do you think it would be better to try and get my passes in at HMP or HRP? I will be at either of the tracks early on Friday to try and get the most runs in.
Let me know if you can meet up and what track you think would be better.

You want an ET or Advanced ET licenese. Whichever one is good to 7.50. I think your first year you get the NHRA membership for free. I could be wrong though. Anyway, after the first year you don't have to re-up your NHRA membership. You just have to pay for the license renewal and physical.
I've got a dyno tuning appointment on Saturday, but should be able to do Friday.

Are you allowed to do all the licensing passes in a single trip? Good luck with the tuning!!
I didn't know David Cook from American Idol was a carb guru!!! No wonder he's an American Idol, haha.

You really are a geek if you actually know names of the people on that show. I'm glad the wife never got interested in it so I don't have to sit through it.

I'm a geek bc I remember the winner from last season b/c I sit with my wife who watches it? Oh well. It's not like I enjoy the show. It's one of a few shows she "must watch" so we record it. I can't force her to only watch the shows I like yet not sit through the crap that she likes. The two that she records that I hate are American Idol and Dancing with the Stars. I like Lost.
On a good note, she really likes watching Top Gear with me, haha.
Sorry Brent, back on topic...

Haha Fred, I like Lost also!
I think HRP on Friday night may be the best bet because it's the only time I will get 1/4 miles passes in before Pinks....I'm not sure at this point if I want to turn the nitrous on or not...I may just run the car on motor this weekend and next weekend at PINKS so that I don't have to deal with all that crap. This may change if David has a flow tool that I can use to set the nitrous fuel pressure correctly.
Ben if I don't do my liscence passes this weekend do you still want to T&T in Baytown on Friday? I was also planning on going to HMP on Sunday as well.

I don't have the funds to go out and test my car again this coming weekend and for a weekend event on 3/21.
That brings up another issue. I'm registered for Pinks, aka I paid my $60, but now I'm getting tempted to run in Tuff Street @ HMP on 3/21.

The Quick 8 at PINKS in San Antonio paid VERY WELL!!!

I think you could definitely make the Quick 8 if the chassis is working! Weather should be nice too!
Flloyd's vega has won the quick 8 a time or two and I want to say its a high 7 second ride, but I don't know if he'll be at this event. Put a kit on the car and go for it, its legal now!

I made a decision last night not to try and kill myself and turn on the bottle at Pinks. I will wait and get the car dialed in on motor and the suspension lined out before I do anything else. I just hope I don't have to have a liscence to run the car all out on motor but that very well may be the case, if so I will find a way to make the car slow down.
If the weather holds I do plan on being at Baytown on Friday night unless something goes wrong with the tuning earlier in the day.

Hey Brent,
Do you still have plans to take your car to Cook this Friday?

Yes, sometime in the morning....will probably try to be up there about 10am.
Then I'm off to Mike's to get a new set of tires mounted and then to HRP if the weather holds out.

Hey, while you're at Mike's, can you pick up a piece of Drivers side window molding for me. It is the piece that goes below the drivers side window and from the mirror to the back of the door. He said he had two of them up there and is giving me one. Just needs to be picked up. Hold onto it and bring it on Wednesday next week when you come by to bleed the brakes.

Brent just left here grinning like a kid on Xmas morning with his new carb tune/mods. His car sounds great and came up on the transbrake w/out a problem, even with the motor being cold.
It sounds good! Hopefully the weather cooperates on Sunday for some test passes!

I talked to Brent on the phone and it sounds like David got it taken care of. The guy definitely seems to know his stuff and hopefully this rain will let up and Brent can get a clean pass down the track!

I might have to make a trip out to the track to see it make some passes. Good luck Brent on the weather.

All I can say is David Cook is the man when it comes to carbs. I'm not going to bad mouth where this expensive carb that i have came from (I bought it used as a part of the entire top end of the motor) but I will honestly say that I will take everything back to David from here on out. The guy is remarkable and knew exactly what the carb was doing from the moment I fired it up.
Turns out the carb was very lean at idle and when you nailed it and the mains kicked in it was too much of a step for it to try and take. We played with the air bleeds for a while (in the rain I might add) and just couldn't get where we needed to be so I yanked the carb off and took inside to the bench where David broke it all down, checked all the clearances and passages with a set of pin gauges and then when we put it back on the motor and messed with the air bleeds and some other things it woke right up and is in the ballpark now. David thinks the jetting is close enough to where you can read the plugs and make some minor adjustments.
BTW, David is in the same shop that Brian Self is in that ported my intake and did a lot of custom work for me in the past. They are real big in the Super Gas and other big time NHRA classes including Pro Stock. These guys are awsome to deal with.
By the way what I was charged was nowhere near what I thought it would be....I would have gladly payed 5 times as much as I gave David to solve this issue!
Now I just hope I can get to the track on Sunday and try it out.
