So I'm cruising to my client site this week, in the Galleria area, with 93.7 on the radio and guess who comes on the radio?! Dayna Steele from the old KLOL! I don't know how many of you guys remember her, but she was on in the afternoons for years with her fan base known as Steele Workers (of which I was one) on the old Rock 101 station...back in the Stevens & Pruitt days.

I remember emailing her when she originally left KLOL and she said she was working on getting back on the air with another station. I don't think she ever did. Instead she went into broadcast consulting and doing voice overs for other clients.

She was on the radio today because she just released a book about the successful business practices of rock stars that's she met over the years. It's also a great trip down memory lane. She talked about hanging out at Astroworld/Waterworld after hours with Billy Idol when he sold out the Southern Star Ampitheater and tied stories like that to the business/work ethics of some of the more successful people in the business (take Gene Simmon's as a good example of a successful businessman). Check out http://www.daynasteele.com/ for more info. As a side note, she's also on the cover of this months Reader's Digest for her patriotism.

Anyway, I emailed her once I got to the office this morning, letting her know that it was great to hear her voice on the radio again after all of these years. I also had to be nosey and ask if she's stayed in the Houston area since leaving KLOL. To my surprise, she replied back to me in about 10 minutes, and it wasn't a form reply either.

lol stalker... I guess so. Her radio show was, and is to this day, the only radio show I've actually won stuff on. :) Not to mention, she's always communicated with me.

Electric lunch, hell yeah! and Moby (Yeah baby!)... and when they gave away 5 corvette's in a week, and the Stevens & Pruitt Holiday Ball, and and and.

Before 101 was turned into the tejano mojado crap it is now, I was able to snag some KLOL and the running radio banners and stickers from some thing they were doing at a store.

I don't remember if it was Dayna, but when they did traffic and talked about stop lights being out or blinking, they would all say together "Treat it as a four way stop. UHHH!". That always made me laugh for some reason.

I also remember Chuck Shrameck (sp?). That guy was a kook!

Man Houston radio, where to I start....anyone remember Moby from 97 rock? I delivered Chinese food to him many a night in Kingwood. What about Grego and Outlaw Radio on KLOL? Outlaw Dave is still around town but still looking for work. What about Kevin Dorsey! I just don't know anymore!

Dorsey is now here in Dallas.....
Has a morning show on 96.3 KSCS, a Country station of all things...
Stevens and Pruitt are also up here on one of the Rock Stations, I mainly cruise to cds or maybe to the wolf for traffic, but rarely to any of the rock stations.....

Must be a different Kevin Dorsey, he was found dead in his home here in Houston back in 2002. Stevens and Pruett broke up a few years ago (2000) as well. Jim Pruitt has a large gun store up in NW Houston and still does some radio on local AM stations here in town from time to time, he used to have a show but I don't think he does any more. Mark Stevens still lives here in Houston, but haven't heard anything about him in years. If they are back in radio it's news to me, but I know they still have the Steven's and Pruett ranch for children and animals off 288.

Kevin Dorsey died??? Any idea on the situation around it?

Another oldie from KLOL is Chuck Shrameck (sp?) the news guy that was also a conspiracy theorist. He died while S&P were on the air as well.

btw I just found this

http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2007/06/houston-radios-laurie-kendrick-talks-to.html

I saw this comment at the bottom:

Locke works at the Tomball Walmart

I believe it, although I'll have to check it out. I know his ex-wife lived in Magnolia/Tomball area.

One of my ex girlfriends was roommates with the promotional director for 101. I remember Locke was the clown at their daughters 2'nd birthday party. I was able to hang out with all those yahoos at one time or another.

I was thinking about Chuck. I think he must have finally touched a nerve with one of his theories, that's why the government gave him the 2 month terminal cancer. I think it might have been when he exposed chem trails.

I'll never forget how dissapointed I was back in my pot smoking days when I asked Outlaw Dave if he wanted to smoke another one and he said he had, had enough....weak sauce !

I can't even go into my holiday ball stories here. Lets just say you are off to a good start when you go into the mens club with your girlfriend and 10 extra holiday ball tickets....Ahhhh good times.

Kevin Dorsey - An opinionated figure on Houston hard-rock radio stations KLOL and “The Arrow”, as producer and DJ, was found dead Oct. 9, 2002 of unknown causes (affects of alcoholism suspected) at age 45.

After KLOL changed formats, Kevin Dorsey subsequently became the afternoon bartender at Jimmie's Ice House in the Heights, where he served as an institutional cornerstone until his untimely death in October 2002. Jimmie's is where I finally met him in person.

Kevin first worked in Houston driving a bread truck, and his route included delivering sweetrolls to the vending machine at the KLOL studio. A stupendously, enthusiastically friendly guy from the Northeast, Kevin got to jawboning every day with station personnel there... and in time they invited him to be on the radio with them.

His short radio "editorials" dealt with every subject from presidential elections to professional wrestling. ("This couple in the bleachers right by me yelled rude things at Kerry von Erich, so I kicked their beer cups over and went to sit somewhere else.") Kevin, appearance only, looked like an alley thug who could rip your head off.

I told Kevin one day that I'd really enjoyed his old radio commentaries, and cited specifics from a few of them -- and I mentioned that friends at my office liked him too. He reacted extremely emotionally... indicating he'd not gotten a lot of direct feedback from his public fan base.

Kevin's life ended prematurely and sadly -- he was impoverished when he died, and it was necessary for friends to rent a casket for his funeral. However, it's obvious that the people who remember Kevin do so with lasting fondness.

And I have proof!!

I was waiting in line last night at the Iron Maiden concert and there was a 106.9 The Point van with a guy standing by it. He was talking to a guy in line and as we got closer, I heard the unmistakable voice of Locke Stevenhousen. I mean, you just can't mistake his voice. So we talk for a short bit and he's now doing promotions for 106.9. Here's a pic of me with Locke (I'm on the right).

BTW, Outlaw Dave has his own show on the 9-5-0 (950am) on Sat nights at 6, at least that's what his horrible page leads me to believe.
